The auspicious windows of the day

Brahma Muhurta falls in the last watch before sunrise and is prized for spiritual practice, learning and clear thought. Abhijit Muhurta sits around local solar noon and is the day's most reliable general-purpose window — a short, self-sufficient time for starting ventures. Vijaya Muhurta, in the early afternoon, carries a name meaning victory and is chosen for undertakings that must succeed against resistance. Amrit Kaal, tied to the ruling nakshatra rather than the sun, is nectar-like and broadly favourable. Godhuli Muhurta is the cow-dust hour of sunset, traditional for marriage and for bringing things home. Nishita Muhurta, around midnight, is reserved for particular vows and worship.

Because these windows are computed from sunrise, sunset and the day's nakshatra, their times move through the year and differ by city, so the list above is generated live rather than fixed.

Choosing a moment versus choosing a date

A shubh muhurat for today answers when within the day to begin — and the everyday answer is usually Abhijit, Amrit Kaal or Vijaya, while avoiding Rahu Kaal and the difficult choghadiya. Choosing an auspicious date for a major event — a wedding, a house-warming, the start of a business — is a larger question called electional astrology or muhurta shastra: it weighs the tithi, the nakshatra, the weekday, the yoga and karana, and for a personal event the individual's own chart, to find a day where all agree. This page addresses the daily windows; a full date election is a separate, chart-based analysis.

The principle behind both is panchanga shuddhi — the purity of the five limbs of the calendar — so that the moment chosen carries no obvious affliction.

Vivah muhurat and griha pravesh muhurat: how the date is chosen

A search for a vivah muhurat or a griha pravesh muhurat asks a different question from the windows above — not which hour of today, but which day of the year. Muhurta shastra answers it by filtering the calendar. For a wedding the classical lists favour eleven nakshatras — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati — and set aside the rikta tithis (the fourth, ninth and fourteenth of each fortnight) along with Amavasya. For entering a new home the favoured stars are the fixed and gentle ones, among them Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

Whole stretches of the year drop out before any single day is weighed. Kharmas — the month the Sun spends in Sagittarius (Dhanu) and again in Pisces (Meena) — carries no wedding dates in the North Indian tradition, and the four months of Chaturmas, from Devshayani to Devuthani Ekadashi, are avoided too, as are the spells when Jupiter or Venus is combust, hidden in the Sun's glare, because those two are the traditional significators of marriage. By our engine's reckoning (sidereal Sun, Lahiri, India Standard Time), Kharmas falls from 15 March to 14 April 2026, from 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027, from 15 March to 14 April 2027, and again from 16 December 2027.

What survives those filters is a shortlist, and each date on it still has to be checked against the charts of the people involved — which is why this page shows today's windows rather than printing a list of wedding days.

How to read the windows above

Prefer the window whose character fits the task: Brahma Muhurta for study or sadhana, Abhijit for a general start, Vijaya where you expect resistance, Godhuli for domestic and marriage occasions. Cross-check against the inauspicious timings — a shubh window that happens to overlap Rahu Kaal loses its edge. Where two people or a ceremony must coordinate, Abhijit's noon anchor is the easiest to agree on because it needs no other input than the day itself.

These are traditional classifications offered for reference, not personal predictions; a genuinely important event still deserves a proper date election.
