What a chart can say about work
People come to career astrology with very concrete questions. Job or business? Should I change fields? When will things move? A Vedic chart cannot hand anyone a job title. What it can do is describe the kind of work a person is temperamentally built for, the areas of life their effort flows into, and the periods when professional change is most likely. This guide explains how the classical method gets there: which houses, which planets, which divisional chart, and which timing tools a practitioner actually uses.
The houses of work and money
Career is not read from one house. The texts spread it across a group:
- 10th house (karma bhava): profession, status, authority, reputation, and what you are publicly known for. This is the centre of any career reading.
- 6th house: daily work, service, employment under others, competition, and the effort of the routine.
- 2nd house: earnings that accumulate: savings, family wealth, and the value of what you produce.
- 11th house: gains, income streams, networks and the fulfilment of ambitions.
- 7th house: partnerships, clients, trade and dealing with the public, which makes it central to any question about business.
The 2nd, 6th and 10th together form the artha trikona, the triangle of material resources. A chart whose strongest planets crowd these houses tends to be organised around work and earning. For a full tour of what each house governs, see the twelve houses explained.
The tenth lord: follow the ruler
The most informative single factor is usually the lord of the tenth, the planet that rules the sign on your tenth house, and where it has gone. The tenth lord carries the career wherever it sits:
- In the 1st: self-directed work, where the person is the brand.
- In the 5th or 9th: career joined to learning, advisory roles, teaching, law or creative work, often with a sense of vocation.
- In the 7th: work through partnerships, clients and the public, with a strong pull toward business or trade.
- In the 11th: large organisations, networks, and steady income growth.
- In the 12th: foreign lands, institutions such as hospitals, research labs or ashrams, and behind-the-scenes roles.
- In the 6th, 8th or 12th generally: more struggle or more unusual routes, though the 6th also suits service, medicine and competitive fields.
The tenth lord's dignity matters as much as its house. Exalted or in its own sign, it delivers its house's results readily. Debilitated or badly afflicted, the same placement asks for more effort and patience.
Three tenth houses, not one
Classical readers rarely stop at the tenth from the lagna. They also count the tenth house from the Moon, which shows how work feels from the inside: what kind of daily activity satisfies the mind. And they count it from the Sun, which shows authority, recognition and one's standing with superiors. When the same theme appears from all three points, say a Mercury connection to every tenth house, the career indication is about as clear as a chart gets. When they disagree, the strongest of the three usually leads, with the others describing secondary interests.
Planets and the work they signify
Planets in the tenth house, or strongly connected to the tenth lord, flavour the profession. The classical associations, translated into modern work, run roughly as follows:
- Sun: government, administration, authority, leadership, and work that carries official status.
- Moon: public-facing work, care and nursing, hospitality, food, and trade in everyday goods.
- Mars: engineering, the armed forces and police, surgery, land and construction, sport and competitive fields.
- Mercury: commerce, accounting, writing, communications, analysis, software and trade.
- Jupiter: teaching, law, finance and banking, counselling, priesthood and advisory roles.
- Venus: arts, design, fashion, entertainment, luxury goods, hospitality and anything that makes life comfortable.
- Saturn: industry, labour and large workforces, mining, agriculture, infrastructure, and long, slow-building careers.
- Rahu: foreign and unconventional fields, new technologies, and work that crosses boundaries.
- Ketu: research, technical precision, highly specialised skills, and spiritual or healing work.
These are directions, not prescriptions. A strong Mars might make a surgeon, an engineer, a property developer or a sports coach. The rest of the chart narrows the field.
A classical rule worth knowing
Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka gives a precise rule for the source of livelihood. Take whichever of the lagna, Moon and Sun is strongest, and find the tenth house from it. Find the planet that rules that house, note which navamsa sign that ruler occupies, and the lord of that sign indicates the nature of one's earnings. The rule shows how the classical method works: it follows the career significator into the navamsa rather than stopping at the surface of the birth chart.
The career chart: dashamsha (D10)
Parashara assigns a dedicated divisional chart to career, the dashamsha, which divides each sign into ten parts. A planet that looks modest in the birth chart but sits strongly in the D10, angular, dignified or with the D10's tenth lord, often turns out to be a career engine. A planet strong in the birth chart but weak in the D10 may promise more than it delivers professionally. The Jaimini view: amatyakaraka
The Jaimini system adds a second lens. Its chara karakas rank the planets by how far each has travelled through its sign. The planet with the highest degree is the atmakaraka, the significator of the self. The second highest is the amatyakaraka (find yours with the amatyakaraka calculator), "the minister", read as the planet that advises and serves the self, and often as the significator of career. An amatyakaraka Mercury points toward analysis and commerce, an amatyakaraka Jupiter toward teaching or counsel. The atmakaraka calculator lists all the chara karakas for a chart.
Job or business?
It is the commonest question, and no single factor answers it. The classical pointers are:
- A strong 6th house and Saturn's influence on the tenth incline toward employment and service within structures.
- A strong 7th house, a well-placed Mercury and a tenth lord linked with the 7th or 11th incline toward business and trade.
- A strong lagna lord and Sun favour independence and leadership, whether as an owner or at the head of an organisation.
Most charts show a mix, which in practice often means employment first and independence later, or a business built on a professional skill.
Timing career change
The promise is in the chart. The timing comes from the Vimshottari dasha. Career changes cluster in the dashas and sub-periods of:
- the tenth lord, and planets placed in the tenth;
- planets strongly placed in the D10;
- the lords of the 6th (new employment) and the 11th (gains, promotion).
Transits act as triggers. Jupiter's aspect on the natal tenth or its lord is associated with recognition; its own transit of the tenth from the Moon is not classically favourable. Saturn's transits over the tenth are associated with heavier responsibility and with restructuring. In the classical gochara scheme counted from the Moon, Saturn's tenth-house transit is not one of its favourable positions, and practitioners read it as a period of hard work rather than easy reward. A transit only delivers what the running dasha supports, which is why two people with the same Saturn transit can have very different years.
Using it well
The best use of career astrology is to understand your natural strengths and your timing, then make decisions with your skills, circumstances and the job market in full view. It should never replace them. It is most useful at forks in the road: when to push for a move, when to consolidate, which of two directions suits the chart's temperament. It is least useful as a lottery for job titles.
