The numbers 1 to 9 in brief
Each root number and the graha Indian numerology links it with, with the qualities tradition associates with it. Open a number for its full meaning as a Mulank and a Bhagyank, its harmonious numbers, traditional weekday and colours.
1Sun · Surya
initiative · independence · leadership
Linked with the Sun and with beginnings. Tradition paints 1 as self-starting and direct, most at ease when it can set the course, with the matching lesson of learning to listen as well as to lead.
Number 1 meaning →2Moon · Chandra
sensitivity · cooperation · imagination
Linked with the Moon. 2 is described as receptive and diplomatic, alert to mood and atmosphere, and strongest in partnership; its traditional challenge is steadiness when feelings run high.
Number 2 meaning →3Jupiter · Guru
learning · teaching · optimism
Linked with Jupiter, the guru among the planets. 3 is associated with knowledge, advice and generous expansion, and with a cheerful confidence that tradition asks to be matched by follow-through.
Number 3 meaning →4Rahu
method · originality · hard work
Linked with Rahu. 4 is described as unconventional and systematic at once — drawn to new ways of doing things and willing to labour at them — with a reputation for sudden turns along the way.
Number 4 meaning →5Mercury · Budh
communication · trade · adaptability
Linked with Mercury. 5 is the number of quick thinking, conversation, commerce and travel in the tradition, versatile and curious, with restlessness as the trait it is said to manage.
Number 5 meaning →6Venus · Shukra
harmony · home · beauty
Linked with Venus. 6 is associated with comfort, art, hospitality and care for family, and with an eye for what is pleasing; tradition cautions only against comfort becoming complacency.
Number 6 meaning →7Ketu
introspection · research · spirituality
Linked with Ketu. 7 is described as inward-looking and analytical, drawn to study, solitude and questions of meaning, and sometimes seen by others as detached when it is simply thinking.
Number 7 meaning →8Saturn · Shani
discipline · patience · endurance
Linked with Saturn. 8 is associated with responsibility, structure and rewards that arrive slowly but last. Its reputation for difficulty is overstated; in the tradition it describes persistence more than misfortune.
Number 8 meaning →9Mars · Mangal
energy · courage · drive
Linked with Mars. 9 is described as active, brave and protective, quick to take up a cause, with patience as the quality it is said to cultivate. Added to any number, 9 leaves its root unchanged.
Number 9 meaning →
Numerology is the practice of reading meaning into numbers — the digits of a birth date, the letters of a name turned into values, the figures on a phone or a number plate. In India it is known as ank jyotish and sits comfortably beside astrology in many households, often consulted when a child is named, a shop is opened or a car is bought. The calculators collected here cover the questions people most often bring to it. Each one does its arithmetic in the open, names the convention it follows wherever schools disagree, and presents its result as a traditional association rather than a prediction about your life.
Two systems and one set of numbers
Two letter systems dominate. The Chaldean system gives letters the values 1 to 8 according to their traditional sound, and it is the one Indian practitioners almost always use for names and businesses. The Pythagorean system counts through the alphabet in runs of nine and is the standard in Western books, where a name yields an expression number, a soul urge and a personality number. The two tables disagree on most letters, so a name rarely comes out the same in both.
Dates are handled more uniformly. Indian practice reads the Mulank from the day of birth and the Bhagyank from the full date. The Western life path is the Bhagyank's close relative, differing only in how it treats 11, 22 and 33. The name calculator on this site shows both letter systems side by side, and the date calculator shows both date methods, so a reader from either tradition finds the figure they expect.
Where the planets come in
Indian numerology ties each root number to one of the nine grahas of Jyotish: 1 to the Sun, 2 to the Moon, 3 to Jupiter, 4 to Rahu, 5 to Mercury, 6 to Venus, 7 to Ketu, 8 to Saturn and 9 to Mars. That link is what gives each number its character in the tradition, and it is why numerology in India borrows so much of its vocabulary from astrology.
It also supplies a principled way to say how two numbers relate. Published lists of friendly numbers contradict one another, so the tools here derive their table directly from the natural planetary friendships given in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Rahu and Ketu, which have no row in that table, are read like Saturn and Mars respectively, following the classical maxim that Rahu behaves like Saturn and Ketu like Mars. Because natural friendship is not symmetrical — the Moon counts Mercury a friend while Mercury counts the Moon an enemy — every comparison is read from the person's own number outward. The same table drives the mobile, vehicle, business and name tools, so a pair of numbers never gets one label on one page and another elsewhere.
Reduction, compound numbers and master numbers
Almost every calculation ends the same way: add the digits, and keep adding until one digit remains. A total of 38 becomes 11 and then 2. The step has a tidy mathematical property — adding the digits of a number never changes its remainder after dividing by nine — which is why different methods of adding up the same date always arrive at the same root.
Two refinements cause most of the confusion between sources. Chaldean readers also look at the compound number, the full total before reduction, so the tools report it. Western readers stop reducing at the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 and read them in their own right, while Indian practice reduces them like any other total. Where it matters, the tools show both figures and say which is which.
Which calculator to start with
If you are new to numerology, start with the date of birth: the Mulank and Bhagyank calculator gives the two numbers every other reading refers back to. The Lo Shu grid calculator then lays the same date out as a picture, showing which numbers the date carries several times and which it lacks. The name calculator is the next step, especially if you are weighing spellings for a child or for yourself.
The remaining three answer specific questions. The mobile number calculator adds up a phone number and compares its root with your Mulank, which is useful when choosing a new SIM. The vehicle number calculator does the same for a car or bike registration, in both of the ways practitioners read plates. The business name calculator applies Chaldean values to a shop or company name and compares the result with the owner's birth numbers.
Numerology and Vedic astrology
The two traditions are often mentioned in the same breath, but they work on entirely different inputs. Vedic astrology calculates where the planets actually were, against the stars, at the moment and place of birth, which is why it needs an accurate birth time and location. Numerology needs only a date or a name, and borrows the planets as symbols rather than computing them. Someone who wants the astronomical picture — rashi, nakshatra, ascendant and dashas — will find it in the free birth chart and the nakshatra calculator on this site.
How to read any result
Treat a number as a prompt for reflection. The traditional descriptions of 1 to 9 offer a vocabulary — initiative, sensitivity, discipline, curiosity — that many people enjoy measuring themselves against. They are not evidence about the future, and nothing in these tools should drive a decision about health, money, work or marriage.
It is also worth knowing the warning signs of numerology sold badly: fear about a supposedly unlucky number, a promise that a new spelling or a new phone number will change your fortune, and expensive remedies offered to fix a missing number. None of these tools sells anything of the kind. Every calculation runs in your browser, and the names, dates and numbers you type are not sent to our servers.
A note on numerology. Numerology is a cultural tradition, not a science. These results are traditional associations offered for reflection; they are not predictions, and they should not guide decisions about health, money, work or marriage. Every calculation runs in your browser, and what you type is not sent to our servers.
Frequently asked questions
What is numerology?
Numerology is a tradition that assigns meaning to numbers derived from a person's date of birth and name, and sometimes from other numbers in their life such as a phone or vehicle number. It is a symbolic system, not a science.
How is Indian numerology different from Western numerology?
Indian practice mostly uses Chaldean letter values, reads the Mulank and Bhagyank from the birth date, links each number to one of the nine grahas, and reduces 11 and 22. Western practice mostly uses Pythagorean values, reads a life path number, and keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers.
What does ank jyotish mean?
Ank means number and jyotish is the traditional word for astrology, so ank jyotish is the Hindi name for numerology — the reading of numbers in the way astrology reads the sky.
Which number is the most important in numerology?
In Indian practice the Mulank, from the day of birth, and the Bhagyank, from the full date, are the two numbers every other reading refers back to. Start with the Mulank and Bhagyank calculator.
Do I need my time of birth for numerology?
No. Numerology uses only the date of birth and the name. A Vedic birth chart is different: it needs the time and place of birth because it calculates real planetary positions.
Is numerology scientifically proven?
No. There is no scientific evidence that numbers derived from a name or date influence events. The calculators here present numerology as a cultural tradition and a tool for reflection, not as a prediction.
The astronomical side
Numerology borrows the planets as symbols. The birth chart computes where they really were at your birth time and place.
