Your Janma Nakshatra is the lunar station the Moon occupied at the moment you were born — one of twenty-seven divisions of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes each. Enter a birth date, time and place below and this works out which one it is, which of its four quarters you fall in, and the Moon sign that quarter belongs to.

Why the birth time matters

The Moon covers a full nakshatra in roughly a day, so it can leave one station and enter the next between morning and evening of the same date. A birth date alone is therefore not enough to fix the answer: two people born on the same day a few hours apart can hold different birth stars, and the boundary often falls at an inconvenient hour. Where the recorded time is approximate, the pada is the first thing to treat as uncertain, because a quarter lasts only about six hours.

Place matters for the same reason. The calculation converts your birth moment to a universal time before locating the Moon, so the longitude and time zone of the town you were born in shift the result near a boundary. This tool uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the sidereal reference the Indian calendar committee adopted and the one almost all Vedic software reports; a tropical calculation would place the Moon in a different sign entirely.

What the result gives you

The nakshatra itself is the station, and it carries a ruling planet, a presiding deity, a symbol and the matching categories used when two charts are compared. The pada narrows that to a quarter and fixes the navamsa sign, which is why nine padas add up to exactly one rashi. The Moon sign follows from the pada rather than being computed separately.
