Mercury Retrograde 2027

Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027: 9 February – 3 March 2027, 10 June – 5 July 2027 and 7 – 28 October 2027, each for about three weeks. The tables give the moment Mercury stations retrograde and stations direct in Indian Standard Time, UTC and US Eastern time, the sidereal sign it stands in at each station, and how long each period lasts. Dates in the text are IST; a few fall a day earlier in UTC or in the Americas, and the tables show where. Mars and Saturn also turn retrograde in 2027, and Jupiter, retrograde from 13 December 2026 (IST), turns direct; Venus does not turn retrograde.

IST is UTC + 5:30. US Eastern is UTC − 5 (EST), or UTC − 4 (EDT) from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November; US Pacific is three hours behind Eastern. Signs are sidereal (Lahiri); length is station to station, rounded to whole days.

What a retrograde is

A planet is retrograde, vakri in Sanskrit, when it appears from Earth to move backward through the zodiac. Nothing in the planet's orbit reverses: Earth and the other planet are moving at different speeds around the Sun, and while the faster one overtakes the slower (Earth passing Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, or Mercury passing Earth on its inner track) the line of sight between them swings backward, much as a train you are overtaking seems to drift backward. Each retrograde begins and ends with a station, a few days in which the planet barely moves against the stars.

Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun, does this about three times a year for roughly three weeks at a time; in 2027 its periods last 22 days, 24 days and 21 days, counted from one station to the other and rounded to whole days. Because the planet doubles back, it can return to the sign it has just left, which is why some rows show two signs.

How the classical texts read a retrograde planet

Jyotisha does not treat a retrograde planet as weak. Classical texts give a retrograde planet extra strength of motion, cheshta bala, one of the six measures of a planet's strength, and a planet that is retrograde in a birth chart is read as acting with more intensity in the matters it rules. A retrograde in the sky is read against the natal chart rather than on its own, through the house it crosses from the Moon or the ascendant and the dasha running at the time.

This page gives the dates and the signs for reference. What a particular retrograde means for one person depends on their own chart, which is where the classical rules apply.

Mercury retrograde 2027, period by period

The first begins on 9 February 2027 at 22:24 IST, with Mercury in Aquarius (Kumbha), and ends on 3 March 2027 at 17:21 IST, backing from Aquarius (Kumbha) into Capricorn (Makara): about 22 days.

The second begins on 10 June 2027 at 23:04 IST, with Mercury in Gemini (Mithuna), and ends on 5 July 2027 at 00:30 IST, staying in Gemini (Mithuna): about 24 days.

The third begins on 7 October 2027 at 19:24 IST, with Mercury in Libra (Tula), and ends on 28 October 2027 at 18:58 IST, backing from Libra (Tula) into Virgo (Kanya): about 21 days.

In UTC and US time

The second table converts each station from IST (UTC + 5:30) to UTC and to US Eastern time, which is UTC − 5 in winter (EST) and UTC − 4 from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November (EDT). A station after midnight or in the morning in India (before about 10:30 IST in winter, 09:30 IST in summer) falls on the previous date in US Eastern time: Mercury turns direct on 5 July 2027 at 00:30 IST, which is 4 July 2027 at 15:00 EDT. US Pacific time is three hours behind Eastern all year.

Jupiter: Leo → Cancer, about 121 days · Mars: Leo → Cancer, about 81 days · Saturn: Aries → Pisces, about 136 days.

Mars retrograde 2027

Mars turns retrograde on 10 January 2027 at 17:42 IST in Leo (Simha) and turns direct on 1 April 2027 at 18:59 IST in Cancer (Karka), about 81 days. Mars goes retrograde only about once every two years, for two to three months, so this is its only retrograde of 2027.

Jupiter retrograde 2027

Jupiter's retrograde begins before the year does, on 13 December 2026 at 04:45 IST in Leo (Simha). Moving backward it re-enters Cancer (Karka) on 25 January 2027 at 00:56 IST and turns direct there on 13 April 2027 at 06:57 IST, about 121 days in all. Jupiter is retrograde for about four months in every year or so.

Saturn retrograde 2027

Saturn turns retrograde on 9 August 2027 at 21:04 IST in Aries (Mesha), backs into Pisces (Meena) on 20 October 2027 at 06:04 IST and turns direct on 24 December 2027 at 07:15 IST, about 136 days. Its return to Pisces matters for sade sati and dhaiya reckonings, which count Saturn's sign from the Moon.

Venus in 2027

Venus does not turn retrograde in 2027. Its retrogrades come about every nineteen months and last about six weeks; the one before 2027 runs from 3 October 2026 to 14 November 2026 (IST), backing from Libra (Tula) into Virgo (Kanya).

Rahu and Ketu

The lunar nodes are always retrograde as this site computes them (the mean node): Rahu and Ketu move steadily backward through the signs, about one sign every eighteen months, so they have no stations to list.

The same dates in both zodiacs

The signs here are sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsa, as Vedic astrology uses them. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which in 2027 runs about 24 degrees ahead of the sidereal one, so its calendars give the same retrograde dates, often with a different sign name: a planet in sidereal Aquarius is, over most of the sign, in tropical Pisces.
