In Hindi astrology Mercury is बुध (Budh), from the same root as buddhi, intelligence; Sanskrit texts also call it Saumya, the gentle son of Soma. Mercury is the planet of the nimble mind: speech, numbers, trade and writing, and an adaptable temperament that takes its colour from whatever planets surround it. This page sets out its governance and nature, its unusual dignity in Virgo, its friendships, its close orbit around the Sun, the practices tradition attaches to it and its reading in each house.
The giver of speech
BPHS calls Mercury the giver of speech, and in the royal cabinet makes it the prince, the heir apparent: young, clever, still learning the work of rule. Its karaka roles are speech, intellect and learning, trade and accounts, writing, and adaptability. Classical lists of house significators give it the 4th house for education and the 10th for profession.
Among the tissues Mercury takes the skin, among tastes the mixed, among places the playground, among units of time a season (ritu), and among the seasons sharad, the clear weather after the monsoon.
Neuter, earthy and rajasic: the chameleon graha
Mercury is neuter, rajasic and, in the BPHS element verse, the graha of earth. Earth gives its intelligence a practical bent toward contracts, ledgers, crafts and the details of how things work, while rajas keeps it busy. Its nature is the most conditional in the system: BPHS counts Mercury a benefic, but one that turns malefic when joined with malefics. BPHS also describes it as attractive, fond of jokes, skilled with words of double meaning, and holding all three humours in balance.
Exaltation and own sign in one place
Among the seven visible grahas, Mercury alone has its exaltation and own sign in the same place. It is exalted at 15° Virgo and debilitated at 15° Pisces. BPHS divides Virgo for it: the first fifteen degrees are the exaltation zone, the next five, 15° to 20°, its mooltrikona, and the last ten plain own sign. Gemini is its second own sign. Directional strength comes in the 1st house, the east, which it shares with Jupiter, while Brihat Jataka makes it lord of the north. In a kendra in Gemini or Virgo it forms Bhadra yoga, one of the five mahapurusha yogas.
Mercury's friends, and the father it does not claim
In BPHS natural friendship Mercury counts the Sun and Venus as friends, treats Mars, Jupiter and Saturn as neutral, and counts the Moon as its enemy, although the Moon regards Mercury as a friend. The Puranic background is a family story: Budh was born of the Moon's liaison with Tara, wife of Brihaspati, and he resented that origin. Jupiter, Tara's husband, also counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury keeps Jupiter at a cool neutral distance.
Aspect, nakshatras and seventeen years
Mercury has only the 7th-house aspect. Its nakshatras are Ashlesha, the coiled serpent star, Jyeshtha, the eldest, under Indra, and Revati, given to Pushan, protector of travellers and lost animals: a guardian, a ruler and a guide. Its Vimshottari mahadasha is seventeen years, and a separate Budh mahadasha guide on the site deals with that period.
Close to the Sun: combustion and retrograde loops
Seen from Earth, Mercury never moves more than about 28° from the Sun, so it is often combust (asta), lost in the solar glare. Many practitioners treat Mercury's combustion more lightly than that of other planets, and a Sun-Mercury conjunction even has a name of its own, Budhaditya yoga. Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year, for roughly three weeks at a time.
In transit it usually spends three to four weeks in a sign, longer when retrograde. Counted from the natal Moon, Phaladeepika makes its transit favourable in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th houses, a list built mostly of even houses and one of the few that counts an 8th-house transit as good.
Upaya: practices associated with Mercury
Wednesday is Mercury's day. BPHS names Maha Vishnu as its presiding deity, so recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama is a common practice, alongside the mantra Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah. Charity of green moong, green vegetables or green cloth on Wednesdays, and of books or stationery to students, belongs to the same tradition, as do truthful speech and honest accounts. Emerald (marakata or panna) is the traditional gem association; wearing it is a personal choice that this page does not recommend, and a gem cannot replace medical, financial or legal advice.
Mercury at work: professions and learning
Tradition links Mercury with merchants, accountants, writers, editors, teachers, translators, analysts, astrologers and anyone whose craft is language or number. In the divisional charts the chaturvimshamsha (D24), the chart of learning, is where Mercury's condition is read most closely, alongside Jupiter's.
Budh in the twelve houses
Classical readings of the graha in each house, counted from the ascendant. They describe tendencies the texts associate with the placement; a real chart is read as a whole, with the sign, aspects and dasha.
1st house
Mercury in the 1st has directional strength and is read as a youthful look, quick wit, skill with words and numbers, and a sense of the right time and place.
2nd house
In the 2nd, Mercury is linked with earning through intelligence, persuasive speech and an interest in finance, languages or teaching.
3rd house
In the 3rd, Mercury is read as a busy, communicative mind suited to writing, media and short journeys, with a habit of juggling tasks.
4th house
In the 4th, Mercury is associated with education, a well-read household and property or vehicles connected with learning or trade.
5th house
In the 5th, Mercury is linked with a bright, inventive intellect, skill in mantra and calculation, and enjoyment of puzzles and creative writing.
6th house
In the 6th, Mercury is read as a mind sharp in argument, audit and analysis; texts note a critical edge in speech that needs tempering.
7th house
In the 7th, Mercury is associated with a youthful or business-minded partner and success in negotiation, contracts and trade partnerships.
8th house
In the 8th, unusually for a benefic, Mercury is read kindly by classical texts: research ability, a lasting reputation and interest in the hidden sciences.
9th house
In the 9th, Mercury is linked with learning in law, philosophy or scripture, eloquent teaching and conduct grounded in study.
10th house
In the 10th, Mercury is read as a career in commerce, communication, administration or analysis, with recognition earned through competence.
11th house
In the 11th, Mercury is associated with gains through trade and networks and a wide circle of clever, useful friends.
12th house
In the 12th, Mercury is read as a private, reflective intellect drawn to foreign languages, research or spiritual study, with spending on learning.
Frequently asked questions
What is Mercury called in Hindi?
Mercury is Budh in Hindi, related to buddhi, intelligence. It is also called Saumya, and Wednesday, Budhvar, is named after it.
Is Mercury a benefic or a malefic?
BPHS counts Mercury a natural benefic that takes on a malefic's nature when joined with malefics. Its company in the chart therefore decides much of how it behaves.
Which day belongs to Mercury?
Wednesday. Traditional Wednesday practices include Vishnu worship, a Budh mantra, and gifts of green moong, green cloth or books to students.
What does Mercury retrograde mean in Vedic astrology?
It is the apparent backward motion Mercury shows about three times a year. Classical texts give a retrograde planet extra strength (cheshta bala), and transits during it are read with the natal chart rather than as a general warning.
What is Mercury's gemstone?
Emerald is the traditional gem association. Wearing one is a personal and traditional choice, not something this page recommends, and it is no substitute for medical, financial or legal advice.
Why is Mercury both exalted and in its own sign in Virgo?
BPHS splits Virgo for Mercury: 0° to 15° is its exaltation zone, 15° to 20° its mooltrikona and 20° to 30° its own sign. None of the other visible grahas holds all three dignities in a single sign.
