In Hindi, Saturn is शनि (Shani), and its longer name Shanaishchara, the one who moves slowly, is the key to reading it. Saturn is the farthest of the seven visible grahas and the most patient: it governs endurance, labour, discipline, old age and longevity, and it needs about two and a half years to cross one sign. Its reputation is heavy, yet the classical texts treat it as the planet that repays steady effort, not as a figure of fear. The sections below follow it from governance through Sade Sati to the twelve houses.
Sorrow, service and the measure of a life
Parashara's governance for Saturn is grief: it is the graha through which a chart shows sorrow and the capacity to bear it. In the royal cabinet it is the servant. Its karaka roles are longevity (ayu), sorrow and endurance, labour and service, discipline and old age. BPHS also calls Saturn the eldest of the grahas, and classical lists make it the significator of the 8th house of longevity, along with the 6th and 12th.
Its tissue is muscle and sinew, its taste astringent, its time a full year, its season the late winter (shishira), and its abode the refuse ground at the edge of the settlement.
Neuter, airy and tamasic
Saturn is neuter, tamasic and, in the BPHS element verse, the graha of air: the dry, cold wind of late winter rather than a pleasant breeze. Tamas here is weight and inertia, which in Saturn becomes the power to contract, delay and consolidate. It is the strongest natural malefic. BPHS draws a tall, lean figure with tawny eyes, large teeth and coarse hair, windy (vata) in constitution and lame, which suits the slow pace its name records.
Exalted in the scales
Saturn is exalted at 20° Libra and debilitated at 20° Aries, the exact mirror of the Sun, which is exalted in Aries and falls in Libra. It owns Capricorn and Aquarius, and its mooltrikona is the first twenty degrees of Aquarius. Libra, the sign of balance, is where Saturn's impartial justice is at its best, while Aries, the sign of haste, sits least well with its patience.
Saturn gains directional strength in the 7th house, the west, and Brihat Jataka also makes it lord of the west. In its own or exaltation sign in a kendra it forms Shasha yoga, one of the five mahapurusha yogas.
Saturn's friends and enemies
In BPHS natural friendship Saturn counts Mercury and Venus as friends, keeps Jupiter neutral and regards the Sun, the Moon and Mars as enemies. Rahu borrows this same set of relations under the maxim Shanivat Rahu, Rahu acts like Saturn. Function can override nature: for Taurus and Libra ascendants Saturn rules both a kendra and a trikona and is counted a yogakaraka, among the most helpful planets in those charts.
Shani's gaze: aspects, nakshatras and nineteen years
Saturn throws full aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself, and Puranic stories make its gaze (drishti) something even the gods preferred to avoid. Its nakshatras are Pushya, star of Brihaspati and widely counted the most auspicious nakshatra for beginnings, Anuradha, given to Mitra, god of friendship, and Uttara Bhadrapada, given to Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the deep. Its Vimshottari mahadasha lasts nineteen years, and the site has a separate Shani mahadasha guide.
Shani's transit and Sade Sati
Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign and close to thirty years for the round. Counted from the natal Moon, Phaladeepika makes its transit favourable in only the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses. Sade Sati, the seven and a half years when Saturn passes through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the natal Moon, is a transit, not a dasha; most people meet it two or three times, and it is read with the birth chart rather than by itself. Saturn's passage through the 4th and 8th from the Moon, called ardhashtama and ashtama Shani, is read in the same spirit.
Son of the Sun and of a shadow
The Puranas make Shani the son of Surya and Chhaya, the shadow-wife who took the place of the Sun's consort, and the brother of Yama, lord of death and of dharma. Born dark and slighted by his father, he became the judge who weighs every deed without favour. The story gives the friendship table its sharpest line, father and son as enemies, and gives Shani the role tradition assigns him: the auditor of karma.
Upaya: practices for Saturn
Saturday is Saturn's day. Common practices are a Saturday fast, lighting a sesame or mustard-oil lamp under a peepal tree, Hanuman worship, and the mantras Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah and Om Shanaishcharaya Namah. Black sesame, mustard oil, black urad, iron vessels, blankets or footwear are given to people who need them. Tradition values conduct most here: fair treatment of workers, care of the elderly, honest labour and punctuality.
Blue sapphire (neelam) is Saturn's traditional gem association, and tradition itself is unusually cautious about it. Wearing one is a personal and traditional choice that this page does not recommend, and it is never a substitute for medical, financial or legal advice.
Shani in the twelve houses
Classical readings of the graha in each house, counted from the ascendant. They describe tendencies the texts associate with the placement; a real chart is read as a whole, with the sign, aspects and dasha.
1st house
Saturn in the 1st is read as a serious, reserved and enduring personality; classical texts read it in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius as authority, elsewhere as an early struggle.
2nd house
In the 2nd, Saturn is linked with slow accumulation, measured or blunt speech and a family role carrying duty, with gains later in life or away from home.
3rd house
The 3rd is one of Saturn's best houses: perseverance, courage under pressure, disciplined effort and a practical, intelligent mind.
4th house
In the 4th, Saturn is read as a home shaped by responsibility, old properties and contentment that arrives late; tradition counsels patience with domestic matters.
5th house
In the 5th, Saturn is associated with a deliberate, serious intellect and delays or extra responsibility around children and creative work.
6th house
In the 6th, Saturn is read as a strong placement: stamina, victory over rivals through persistence and ability in service, labour or law.
7th house
In the 7th, Saturn has directional strength and is linked with a mature or duty-bound partnership, often formed later, with loyalty valued over romance.
8th house
In the 8th, its house of longevity, Saturn is read as endurance, interest in research and hidden things, and slow-moving inheritances.
9th house
In the 9th, Saturn is associated with a hard-won or unorthodox faith, a sober bond with the father or teachers, and respect earned through discipline.
10th house
In the 10th, Saturn is read as a career built slowly and solidly, leadership of groups or institutions, and authority earned through service.
11th house
In the 11th, Saturn is linked with lasting gains, long friendships and durable income; classical texts count it among its most favourable houses.
12th house
In the 12th, Saturn is associated with expenditure, solitude, work in distant places or institutions, and quiet, disciplined spiritual practice.
Frequently asked questions
What is Saturn called in Hindi?
Saturn is Shani in Hindi, also Shanaishchara, Manda and Sauri, son of the Sun. Saturday is Shanivar, the day named after it.
Is Shani always bad?
No. Saturn is a natural malefic, but it is a yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra ascendants, strong in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses, and classical texts credit it with patience, justice and lasting achievement.
Which day belongs to Saturn?
Saturday. A Saturday fast, a sesame-oil lamp, Hanuman worship, a Shani mantra and gifts of black sesame, oil or blankets are the usual observances.
What is the difference between Shani transit and Shani mahadasha?
A transit, including Sade Sati, is Saturn's current movement measured against the natal Moon and is shared by everyone born under that Moon sign. The mahadasha is Saturn's own nineteen-year turn in the Vimshottari cycle, timed from the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth.
What is Saturn's gemstone?
Blue sapphire, neelam, is the traditional association. Wearing it is a personal and traditional choice this page does not recommend, and no gem replaces medical, financial or legal advice.
How long does Saturn stay in one sign?
About two and a half years, completing the zodiac in roughly twenty-nine and a half years. Retrograde phases can carry it briefly back into the previous sign.
