Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra
The twenty-sixth birth star, a Saturn band lying wholly inside Jupiter’s Pisces, kept by Ahir Budhnya, the serpent the older litanies place at the bottom of the waters.

Uttara Bhadrapada is the twenty-sixth nakshatra and the last of the three segments the Vimsottari scheme hands to Saturn, after Pushya and Anuradha. It opens at 3°20’ of Pisces and closes at 16°40’, so the whole thirteen degrees and twenty minutes lie inside a single rashi, Jupiter’s mutable water, without reaching a sign boundary at either end. Sanskrit lists seat Ahir Budhnya over it, a serpent named for the deep, and give it the two legs at the far end of a funeral cot for an emblem — the half whose front pair belongs to Purva Bhadrapada immediately behind it. Bhadra means auspicious and pada a foot, so the two are read together as the blessed feet, uttara marking this as the later of them, and the lunar month Bhadrapada carries the same word. Its anchors in the sky are Gamma Pegasi, on the far corner of the great square, and Alpha Andromedae past it; some almanac tables assign the segment the colour purple.
Uttara Bhadrapada: a Saturn band held entirely inside Pisces
Purva Bhadrapada, just ahead of it, begins in Aquarius and spills only its final quarter across the cusp. Revati, just behind, takes the closing half of the sign. Uttara Bhadrapada occupies the middle stretch cleanly, which is why the rashi printed against it never changes: a Moon anywhere in this band is a Pisces Moon, and no reader has to check the longitude before settling the sign.
The arrangement seats a Saturn star inside a Jupiter rashi, and classical method treats those as two separate questions. Whatever stands here has Jupiter for its dispositor, since Jupiter owns the sign, and Saturn for its period lord, since Saturn owns the star. Both are wanted, because the sign describes the field a graha is standing in while the star names the stretch of years during which it gets to speak.
Saturn is given nineteen years in the Vimsottari distribution, second in length only to Venus. A nativity with the Moon in this band opens inside whatever remains of those nineteen years, the balance measured by how far the Moon had travelled into the thirteen degrees and twenty minutes, and Mercury’s seventeen years follow directly. Between them the two lords account for thirty-six of the hundred and twenty years the scheme lays out.
Ahir Budhnya, the deep serpent, and the cot’s hind legs
Ahir Budhnya is one of those deities the older litanies name without building much story around. Ahi is the snake and budhna the bottom or the base of a thing, and the compound is glossed as the serpent of the deep — the coil lying beneath the waters and beneath the atmosphere rather than the one that strikes across them. Later devotional layers pull him toward Rudra’s circle, and commentators reach for the familiar picture of a world resting on a serpent’s hood: something vast, motionless, and carrying load.
He is invoked alongside Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat who keeps Purva Bhadrapada, and the tradition treats the two as a matched pair rather than as neighbours who happen to be adjacent. One is described upright and standing on a single foot, the other horizontal and coiled under everything; they are set out as the raised face and the sunken face of one arrangement.
The emblem repeats that doubling exactly. Purva Bhadrapada holds the front legs of the cot on which a body is carried out, and this star holds the hind pair, so the bier exists only across both of them. Astrologers read the second half as the end that takes the weight once the motion has stopped — closure, the last rites, the portion of a passage that nobody watches. Certain lists also call this segment the warrior star, and it is the coil, not the strike, that the title is understood to mean.
The classing of Uttara Bhadrapada: human gana, cow yoni, middle nadi
The Manushya or human class takes nine stars and this is the last of them: Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, the two Phalgunis, the two Ashadhas and the Bhadrapada pair. The label grades obligation rather than merit. Texts describe the human stars as answerable, socially entangled and inclined to weigh what is owed before moving, and placing that disposition under a deity named for the depths is a contrast the commentaries notice rather than smooth over.
The yoni column assigns it the cow. Its only counterpart anywhere in the circle is Uttara Phalguni, entered as the bull, so one animal is divided between two stars sitting roughly half a zodiac apart. What the column grades is animal rapport and nothing else; commentaries describe both halves of this pair as steady under a burden and hard to divert once moving. The table sets the tiger against the cow, and the tiger is held by Chitra and Vishakha.
Its pulse division is Madhya, the middle channel, held with Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha and Dhanishta. Of the eight koota columns this one is weighted heaviest, and the whole of its eight points falls away when two nativities share a division, so the Madhya roster is the first list to check whenever this birth star is set against another.
What Uttara Bhadrapada is traditionally asked to do for a living
Occupational material for this band is built from three sources that agree more than they compete. Saturn supplies duration, labour, the old and the buried, and work carried out at the edge of what other people are willing to handle. Pisces supplies counsel, scripture, charity, water, and the whole business of boundaries loosening. Ahir Budhnya supplies foundations — what a structure is resting on, and what has to hold before anything above it can stand.
Older handbooks accordingly tie this stretch to teaching and priestly office, to the administration of endowments and relief work, to occupations conducted near water or below ground, and to archives, long research and the slow trades that repay patience rather than speed. The funeral cot adds the offices of the last rites and the care of the dying to the same list. Classical writers also associate the segment with a living established far from the birthplace, and with accumulation that arrives unhurried.
None of it comes attached to the birth star. What a reader actually weighs is the tenth house, whoever owns it, the divisional standing of that owner, and the period genuinely in force; the star colours that judgement and never replaces it. Two charts sharing this nakshatra and differing in the strength of the tenth lord are read to entirely different effect.
Uttara Bhadrapada in a match: the koota shortlist and the waist rajju
The eight koota columns are computed almost entirely off the Moon — the star it occupies and the sign that star lies in — so a nativity from this band arrives carrying Manushya gana, cow yoni, Madhya nadi and Pisces. Compared right around the circle, the closest agreements come out as Revati first, then Uttara Ashadha and Shravana, with Uttara Phalguni and Hasta behind them. Revati leads for reasons easy to trace: an identical rashi, a different pulse division, and an animal the table does not set against the cow.
It is worth being plain about what a high total is. Every one of those five clears the nadi column simply by not being Madhya, and that single column carries eight of the thirty-six points, so a good part of any of these sums is one structural fact repeating itself. The writers who laid the columns out treated the arithmetic as a way of narrowing a field, never as a decision, and they attached their own exceptions to it in the same breath.
This star belongs to the kati or waist rajju, together with Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha and Purva Ashadha. Two nativities landing in one rajju division are flagged for another look however handsome the total, and none of the five shortlisted stars sits in this group, which is part of why they surface at all. Beyond the table, the older method looks at what the arithmetic cannot see: the seventh house in each chart, the graha owning it, how Jupiter and Venus are placed, where Mars falls when counted twice over, and which period each nativity has just entered.
Uttara Bhadrapada quarter by quarter: Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio amsas
Pisces is a water sign, so its navamsa run begins at Cancer, and by the time this band opens at 3°20’ the count has already reached the second ninth part. The first quarter, 3°20’ to 6°40’, therefore draws a Leo amsa under the Sun with dharma for its aim. Saturn over the star, Jupiter over the sign and the Sun over the ninth part share almost nothing between them, and this is the most openly declarative length of the four.
The second quarter, 6°40’ to 10°00’, takes a Virgo amsa under Mercury with artha as its aim, and readers locate the measuring, sorting and correcting face of the star there. The third, 10°00’ to 13°20’, draws Libra with kama for its aim, and it is the quarter practitioners single out, because the ninth part hands the segment’s own lord his sign of exaltation: Saturn rules the stretch while Venus rules the amsa in which Saturn is raised.
The final quarter, 13°20’ to 16°40’, takes a Scorpio amsa under Mars aimed at moksha, returning the ninth part to water after fire, earth and air. Not one quarter here is vargottama — the Pisces navamsa within Pisces falls beyond 26°40’, which is Revati’s ground and not this star’s. So the rashi element stands still across all four while the amsa element turns over completely.
Saturday austerities and serpent offerings kept for Uttara Bhadrapada
Observance for this star runs along two lines the tradition keeps apart. The first belongs to Saturn, who owns the segment: Saturday is his day, sesame and black gram the usual offerings, iron and dark blue or black cloth the materials, and service to the aged, the disabled and to manual workers is prescribed far more often than any purchase. The Shani stotras and the hymn attributed to Dasharatha are the recitations most often named.
The second belongs to the deity. Ahir Budhnya draws serpent observance — milk and lamps set at an anthill or a snake mound, offerings made at wells, tanks and river banks — and, because the later layers absorb him into Rudra’s company, abhisheka with water and the Rudra recitation are kept for him as well. The month of Bhadrapada and the day in each lunar cycle when the Moon crosses this band are the times customarily chosen.
Because the emblem is a bier, rites for the dead attach here too, and tarpana together with the observances of the ancestral fortnight are linked to this star in practice. The texts set all of it out as devotional and dispositional, owed to a deity and to a graha, and the classical writers prescribing it do not hang consequences on it.
Uttara Bhadrapada in practice: the janma Moon against every other graha
The Moon standing in this band makes it the janma nakshatra, and that placement carries the most weight by a long way. It sets the Vimsottari sequence to begin inside Saturn’s nineteen years with the balance fixed by degree, it supplies the gana, yoni, nadi and rajju every matching table then consumes, it decides which daily transit reading applies to the nativity, and it yields the naming syllables the traditional lists give the four quarters — du, tha, jha and na.
Any other graha here is used differently. It is not the janma star, so it feeds nothing into a match; what it does is bind that graha to Saturn’s periods, so a Sun, a Mercury or a Venus in this stretch is expected to render much of its account while Saturn’s dasha and sub-periods run. Pisces then complicates each case on its own terms: Venus stands in its sign of exaltation while sitting in Saturn’s star, Mercury stands in its sign of debilitation, and Jupiter stands in a rashi it owns and yet under Saturn’s nakshatra lordship.
A lagna falling in this band asks for both lords at once — Jupiter for the rising sign, Saturn for the rising star — and the quarter then tells the reader which navamsa the lagna occupies, which is where most of the working detail comes from. Astrologers hold the star as one layer among several, tested against the bhava it falls in, the condition of Jupiter and of Saturn, and the period actually in force, rather than as a description that can stand by itself.

Questions about Uttara Bhadrapada
What degrees of Pisces does Uttara Bhadrapada cover?
Uttara Bhadrapada runs from 3°20’ to 16°40’ of sidereal Pisces, its full thirteen degrees and twenty minutes contained in one sign. Purva Bhadrapada finishes where it begins and Revati starts where it ends, so a Moon anywhere inside the band is always a Pisces Moon and no boundary check is needed before the rashi is read.
Which planet rules Uttara Bhadrapada, and who is Ahir Budhnya?
Saturn owns the segment in the Vimsottari scheme, the third and last of his bands after Pushya and Anuradha, carrying a nineteen-year period. Ahir Budhnya is the presiding deity, a serpent whose name joins ahi, the snake, with budhna, the bottom or base; the lists gloss him as the serpent of the deep, and later material draws him into Rudra’s company.
Which birth stars sit closest to Uttara Bhadrapada in ashtakoota?
Compared around the whole circle the closest agreements are Revati, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Uttara Phalguni and Hasta. All five clear the nadi column by not being Madhya, and none of them shares the waist rajju, which is much of why they rise. Classical practice takes the shortlist as an opening field and then examines the seventh house, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and the running periods in both charts.
What changes across the four Uttara Bhadrapada padas?
The rashi never moves, since all four quarters lie in Pisces, but the navamsa turns over entirely: Leo for the first, Virgo for the second, Libra for the third and Scorpio for the fourth, with dharma, artha, kama and moksha as their stated aims. The third is the one readers mark, because Saturn, the star’s own lord, is exalted in a Libra amsa.
How does Uttara Bhadrapada differ from Purva Bhadrapada?
The two share an emblem and split it between them. Purva Bhadrapada holds the front legs of the funeral cot under Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat, and answers to Jupiter as period lord; Uttara Bhadrapada holds the hind legs under Ahir Budhnya and answers to Saturn. The earlier star also crosses from Aquarius into Pisces, while this one lies wholly within Pisces.
