Uttara Phalguni is twelfth in the sidereal order and one of three bands the Sun rules in the Vimsottari scheme. It opens at 26°40’ of Leo, inside the Sun’s own rashi, and closes at 10°00’ of Virgo, dividing a single birth star unevenly between two signs under two different owners. Sanskrit lists seat Aryaman, an Aditya, over it, and give it the back legs of a cot for an emblem — the far half of a bed whose front legs belong to Purva Phalguni immediately ahead of it. Its brightest anchor is the white star at the lion’s tail, entered in western catalogues as Denebola. Phalguni names the pair of them; Uttara marks this as the later one, and the lunar month of Phalguna carries the same word.
Uttara Phalguni from 26°40’ of Leo into Virgo
The band is the standard thirteen degrees and twenty minutes wide, but only a quarter of it — three degrees twenty minutes — lies in Leo. The other ten degrees sit in Virgo, Mercury’s mutable earth. That is why the rashi printed beside an Uttara Phalguni Moon may read either Leo or Virgo, and why a practitioner wants the precise longitude rather than the star name alone before setting up anything that turns on the sign.
The split is not peculiar to this segment. Every nakshatra the Sun rules is cut the same way: Krittika keeps one quarter in Aries and three in Taurus, Uttara Ashadha one in Sagittarius and three in Capricorn, and this star one in Leo and three in Virgo. A fire sign hands the solar band over to an earth sign after a single pada in each case, and commentators read the pattern as solar light being set to work inside something that holds a shape.
The Sun’s dasha runs six years, shortest of the nine. A nativity holding the Moon here therefore begins inside whatever was left of those six years at birth, and the lunar decade takes over soon after, so the earliest stretch of such a life moves from a solar span to a lunar one comparatively quickly.
Aryaman, the cot’s hind legs, and what the Phalguni pair frames
Aryaman is one of the Adityas, the solar sons of Aditi, and the older hymns place him next to Mitra and Varuna as guardian of what people owe each other by custom rather than by force. Hospitality shown to a guest, a vow honoured, the standing of a family line, the marriage contract itself — these are his portfolios, and the vivaha verses call him by name. He is also given a road: the band of the Milky Way is described as Aryaman’s path, travelled by the ancestors.
The emblem makes sense only with its other half. Purva Phalguni holds the pair of legs under the pillow end of a cot; this star holds the two at the opposite end, and between them the frame of one bed is complete. The second half is read as the end bearing weight after rest has stopped being a novelty — the settled household rather than the wedding night, the couch that carries a long convalescence, the frame still upright while a line of descent passes itself on.
Two further associations travel with the name. Certain almanacs draw a fig tree, or a hammock slung between posts, for this stretch, preserving the same idea of a frame that keeps something at rest. And the epic tradition gives Arjuna the epithet Phalguna, which later writers reach for whenever they want an example of a solar star acting on behalf of an agreement rather than for its own account.
Manushya gana, bull yoni and Adi nadi in Uttara Phalguni
Uttara Phalguni is grouped Manushya, the human class, along with Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada. The label grades nothing morally. Its own texts treat the human class as obligated, sociable and answerable, and placed next to Aryaman’s guardianship of agreements, commentators take it for a disposition that keeps score by what it has undertaken on someone else’s behalf.
The animal is the bull. Only Uttara Bhadrapada carries the same go yoni, the tables treating those two as the male and female of one beast. What that column measures is animal rapport, not disposition, and the go pair is described as unhurried, tolerant of weight, and slow to abandon a direction once taken. Its declared adversary in the same table is the tiger, held by Chitra and Vishakha.
Its pulse division is Adi, first of three, held with Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. Of the eight columns this one carries the largest weight and is surrendered entirely when both charts land in one division, so the Adi list is the first thing consulted whenever an Uttara Phalguni Moon comes up for comparison.
Patronage, contracts and service in the Uttara Phalguni work lists
Occupational material for this star arrives from three directions at once. The Sun that rules it supplies office, delegated authority, and work performed in someone else’s name. Mercury, owner of three quarters out of four, supplies the accounting, drafting, measuring and correcting that fill the Virgo stretch. Aryaman supplies the whole field of patronage — endowments, trusteeship, charitable foundations, hospitality, and the administration of what other people have handed to a keeper.
Older handbooks put marriage brokerage, arbitration, and the drawing up and honouring of agreements squarely in this band, beside the service occupations Virgo attracts and, from the bull yoni, work with cattle, dairy and land. Practitioners hold all of it as a range of leanings to be checked against the tenth bhava, its dispositor and the dasha in force — never as an occupation issued along with the birth star. Identical star attributes over a weakened tenth lord and over a well-placed one are read to very different effect.
Ashtakoota with an Uttara Phalguni Moon, and the stomach rajju
Ashtakoota derives nearly everything it compares from where the Moon stands by star and by sign, so this nakshatra brings Manushya gana, bull yoni, Adi nadi and — quarter depending — Leo or Virgo to the exercise. Run around the full circle, the nearest matches for Uttara Phalguni come out as Uttara Bhadrapada first, then Anuradha, with Mrigashira, Pushya and Swati behind them. The leader is easy to account for: it pairs the identical go yoni in its female form, sits in the same human class, and differs in pulse division, so several columns fall its way together.
The remaining four are Deva-class stars whose nadi is not Adi, and much of their agreement traces back to that one fact. Worth stating plainly, because a large sum assembled mostly out of two columns is a different object from one earned evenly across eight, and the writers who set the columns out also set out the warning that the arithmetic narrows a field instead of deciding it.
This star belongs to the udara or stomach rajju. Purva Bhadrapada, Vishakha, Punarvasu, Krittika and Uttara Ashadha occupy the same band, which is the one rajju division holding every star the Sun owns. Two charts are kept out of a single division, so an Uttara Phalguni chart set opposite a Krittika or an Uttara Ashadha chart earns a second look there however handsomely the total reads. After the table, classical practice sends a reader to the seventh bhava and its dispositor, to Venus and Jupiter, to Mars counted from lagna and from Moon, and to the dasha each chart is walking into.
From a Sagittarius navamsa to a Pisces one: the Uttara Phalguni quarters
Only the opening quarter, 26°40’ to 30°00’, stands in Leo, and it draws a Sagittarius navamsa with dharma for its aim. The Sun keeps both sign and star while Jupiter takes the ninth part, making this the most frankly solar of the four; the tradition reads it as the band at its most declarative, speaking from conviction and from a place already occupied.
Past thirty degrees of Leo the star lies wholly in Virgo, and the ninth parts advance one sign per quarter. The second, covering the first three degrees twenty minutes of Virgo, draws a Capricorn navamsa aimed at artha: Mercury over the rashi, Saturn over the ninth part, the most deliberate and most acquisitive length of the whole star. The third, 3°20’ to 6°40’, shifts into Aquarius with kama for its aim, keeping Saturn but trading his earth for his air, and commentaries locate the organising, associating, publicly answerable face of the star in that quarter.
The last quarter, from 6°40’ to the tenth degree of Virgo, draws a Pisces navamsa with moksha for its aim, Jupiter returning to the ninth part after two Saturnine ones. The element this solar star must work through shifts by quarter — fire, then earth, then air, then water. None of the quarters is vargottama: the Leo pada takes the ninth and final navamsa of its sign, the Virgo padas take the first three of theirs, and at no point does the ninth part repeat the rashi.
Aryaman observances and the dhruva standing of Uttara Phalguni
In muhurta the star belongs to the dhruva or fixed set, with Rohini, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada. Elections drawn from that set are for things meant to stand: foundations, tree planting, installing an image, first entry into a house, and marriage above everything — the point where this star’s deity and its almanac use converge, since the wedding verses address Aryaman directly and calendars mark this band for the rite itself.
What is kept for the star follows the Sun. Sunday is observed; the Aditya hymns and the solar mantra are said at sunrise and through solar periods; wheat, jaggery, copper, and cloth in red or saffron are the customary gifts. Aryaman is counted among the lords of the departed and the Milky Way is named for his road, so rites for the pitrs are traditionally associated here, many households setting them by the Moon’s monthly return to the band.
No promised outcome is attached to any of it by the writers who prescribe it, and it reads best the way they meant it — as discipline, as remembrance, and as a way of marking the star when the calendar comes round to it.
Uttara Phalguni at the desk: the Moon here, other grahas here
Everything begins with identifying the occupant of the band. A Moon there makes Uttara Phalguni the janma nakshatra, and the consequences run outward in every direction: dasha opens inside a six-year solar span sized by how far the Moon had already travelled into the segment; gana, yoni, nadi and rajju for a comparison are lifted from this point; the tara cycle for daily timing and elections is counted forward beginning here.
The Leo-Virgo boundary inside the star does real work at this stage. A Moon at twenty-eight degrees of Leo answers to the Sun for star and for sign alike, and the reading concentrates on solar significations; a Moon at three degrees of Virgo keeps the Sun for its star but hands the rashi to Mercury, and the two dispositors then have to be weighed against each other. One nakshatra, two sign lords, a different daily horoscope, and different sign-based columns whenever the chart goes to a match.
Where some other graha occupies the band, the Sun stands behind it as second dispositor: the Sun’s bhava, its dignity, and the occupant’s angular distance from it all tint the result, and such a graha usually grows loudest in solar dasha and antardasha. Anything sitting near the Sun in this stretch is tested for combustion before much else is said of it. From there a reader marks the bhava the band falls in from lagna, the quarter the graha holds, and whether the Sun is in any shape to carry what the star is credited with.

Questions about Uttara Phalguni
Which signs does Uttara Phalguni nakshatra fall in?
Uttara Phalguni opens at 26°40’ of Leo and ends at 10°00’ of Virgo. Its first quarter alone, three degrees twenty minutes wide, lies in the Sun’s rashi; the other ten degrees belong to Mercury. The Sun rules the star along its whole length, so the sign lord changes at the boundary while the star lord does not, which is why a precise longitude matters for anything sign-based.
Aryaman and the cot legs: what do the Uttara Phalguni emblems mean?
The presiding deity is Aryaman, an Aditya standing behind hospitality, vows, family standing and the marriage contract, whose road the older texts identify with the Milky Way. The emblem is the back legs of a cot. Purva Phalguni holds the front legs, so between them the two stars frame one bed, and this half is taken for the end that bears weight once resting has settled into routine.
Which birth stars rank highest with Uttara Phalguni in ashtakoota?
Around the full circle, the closest matches computed for Uttara Phalguni are Uttara Bhadrapada, then Anuradha, Mrigashira, Pushya and Swati. The leader pairs the same bull yoni in its female form and shares the human class while differing in pulse division. The rest are Deva-class stars agreeing chiefly on nadi. Such a table shortens a list; older writers still send you on to the seventh bhava, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and the dasha ahead.
How do the Uttara Phalguni padas differ from one another?
Their navamsas run Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, aimed in turn at dharma, artha, kama and moksha. The first alone stands in Leo; the rest are Virgo. Behind the ninth part sit Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn and Jupiter, while the working element goes fire, earth, air, water. Not one of the four is vargottama, because nowhere in this band does the ninth part repeat the rashi it sits in.
How is an Uttara Phalguni Moon used in practice?
It fixes the janma nakshatra, so Vimsottari opens in a six-year solar span sized from the balance standing at birth, and gana, bull yoni, Adi nadi and the udara rajju are all lifted from this point for any comparison. Daily timing counts the tara cycle forward from here. A different graha in the same band answers to the Sun as second dispositor and gets tested for combustion.
