Uttara Ashadha is twenty-first in the sidereal circle and the last of three segments handed to the Sun by Vimsottari. Sagittarius 26°40’ is where it opens, Capricorn 10°00’ where it stops, and one star is split there between Jupiter’s mutable fire and Saturn’s cardinal earth. Sanskrit lists set the Vishvedevas over it — the All-Gods, addressed as a company rather than singly — and give it the tusk of an elephant for an emblem, with a plank or square seat appearing beside the tusk in some tables. Ashadha names what has not been subdued; Purva Ashadha carries the earlier half of that word and this star the later, which is why older translators render the two as the earlier and the later victory. Its anchor in the archer’s shoulder is entered in catalogues as sigma Sagittarii, and almanacs that assign a colour to each star give this one copper.
Where Uttara Ashadha sits: 26°40’ of Sagittarius to 10°00’ of Capricorn
This band is the usual thirteen and a third degrees across, though shared unequally. One quarter of it, three and a third degrees, stands in Sagittarius; the balance, ten full degrees, lies in Capricorn. A chart carrying an Uttara Ashadha Moon may therefore print Dhanus beside it or Makara, and every column that keys off the rashi instead of the star follows that difference. A careful reader asks for the exact longitude before setting up a comparison, a transit note or anything sign-based.
The frontier inside this star is no ordinary one. Thirty degrees of Sagittarius is where the Sun makes its sidereal ingress into Capricorn, the crossing the calendars call Makara Sankranti and the point from which the northward half of the year is reckoned. The graha that owns Uttara Ashadha in the dasha scheme makes its most celebrated turn inside a band it rules, exactly at the seam between the opening quarter and the second.
Ownership and residence pull against each other along most of this star. The Sun holds it as lord from end to end, while Saturn holds the sign under three of its four quarters, and the standard tables of friendship count those two natural enemies. Jupiter, whom the same tables count a friend of the Sun, governs the sign under the first quarter alone. Astrologers give this as the reason one nakshatra can read so differently at twenty-eight degrees of Sagittarius and at eight degrees of Capricorn, with no change of star lord at all.
The Vishvedevas and the elephant tusk of Uttara Ashadha
The Vishvedevas are not a single figure but a class — the All-Gods, invoked together in the hymns and receiving a share of the oblation as a group instead of by name. Puranic lists count ten, among them Vasu, Satya, Kratu, Daksha, Kala, Kama and Dhriti, born to Vishva, herself one of Daksha’s daughters. The plural is the point. No one deity presides over Uttara Ashadha, and the sanction the tradition attaches to it is the sanction of an assembly rather than of a patron.
This is also why the deity turns up in the household rites for the departed. The All-Gods are seated and fed in a shraddha before the ancestors themselves are addressed, which places the presiding power of this star in the position of the witnessing body that makes a private rite valid. Commentaries carry the same idea into ordinary affairs and connect this band with undertakings that hold because many have agreed to them, not because one person pushed them through.
The emblem is the tusk of an elephant, with a squared plank or the seat of a low cot added in several almanacs. Purva Ashadha holds the fan and winnowing basket immediately ahead of it, so the pair travels from the implement that separates grain to the ivory that neither wears away nor comes out easily. A tusk is the part of the animal that outlives the animal, and writers on the nakshatras reach for it whenever they want an image of something seated, load-bearing and hard to undo.
Manushya gana, the mongoose yoni and the Antya nadi of Uttara Ashadha
The gana is Manushya, the human grade, held here alongside Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, both Phalguni stars of the human list, Purva Ashadha and the two Bhadrapadas. Older tables add three further columns for this star: sattva for its guna, the Kshatriya grade for varna, and a dual or common quality of movement. Not one of those is a compliment or a rebuke; they are sorting labels that the matching sheets and the dasha texts pick up later.
The animal is the mongoose, and it deserves saying plainly that no second nakshatra carries it. Thirteen of the fourteen yoni animals come as a male star and a female star; nakula stands by itself, so an Uttara Ashadha chart meets its own creature nowhere on the circle. Its declared adversary is the serpent, held by Rohini and Mrigashira, and that opposition is the most consequential thing this column does for the star. The literature describes the mongoose as quick, watchful and unwilling to leave a hole uninspected.
Its pulse division is Antya, the kapha current, kept with Shravana next door and with Revati, Magha, Ashlesha, Rohini, Krittika, Vishakha and Swati. Nadi carries the heaviest weight of the eight columns and is forfeited entirely when two charts fall in one current, which makes that roster the list a reader checks before any other once a chart from this band arrives for matching. Antya is the third and least mobile of the currents, and the older writers associate it with retention rather than circulation.
Office, coalition and the Uttara Ashadha vocation lists
Three influences shape the occupational material gathered around this star. The Sun contributes office, delegated command and labour performed in a public name. Saturn, who owns the sign under three quarters, contributes duration, structure and a tolerance for long unglamorous stretches. The Vishvedevas contribute the plural: councils, boards, standing committees, coalitions and federations, and any enterprise whose authority rests on a body of people rather than a single signature.
Handbooks accordingly gather administration here, along with the civil and defence services, institutional leadership, adjudication and law, protracted engineering and construction, and the stewardship of endowments. From the mongoose the same handbooks add investigative trades — audit, inspection, survey, and work that brings out what has been kept out of sight. Classical writers treat all of it as leaning and not allotment, to be weighed each time beside the tenth house, the strength of its lord, and whatever period happens to be running.
Two temperamental notes recur in the older descriptions and belong beside the trade lists rather than in any forecast. One is slow ignition: effort that gathers over a long approach and then keeps its line once committed. The other is a guarded circle, admission granted by stages and to few. Astrologers read both as dispositions that a supported or an afflicted tenth lord will sharpen or dull, and neither as a statement about how a life turns out.
Ashtakoota with an Uttara Ashadha Moon, and the stomach rajju
Ashtakoota builds nearly every test it runs out of the Moon’s star taken together with the Moon’s rashi, so a chart from this band brings the human grade, the mongoose, the Antya current and — quarter depending — Sagittarius or Capricorn into the exercise. Measured against the whole circle, the nearest agreements are Uttara Bhadrapada, then Pushya, Purva Bhadrapada, Ashwini and Anuradha. Each of those five sits in a pulse division other than Antya, and because nadi carries the single largest weight, much of every one of those totals is already explained by that column alone.
The mongoose then caps a different column. Since no partner star carries nakula anywhere, the yoni test can never return its full award to this nakshatra however well the rest of the sheet behaves; a friendly animal is the ceiling, an identical one is unavailable. Rohini and Mrigashira, holding the serpent, sit at the hostile end of the same column. That is precisely the kind of structure a total conceals, which is the reason the writers who set out the columns also warned that such sums shorten a candidate list and settle nothing by themselves.
Uttara Ashadha belongs to the nabhi or stomach rajju, and sits in the ascending arc of it beside Krittika and Uttara Phalguni — all three stars the Sun owns packed into one band. Purva Bhadrapada, third on the shortlist, lies in the descending half of that same band, and the manuals ask two charts to stay out of one rajju division, permitting the arrangement only where one star ascends while the other descends. A separate rule names this star and Punarvasu as vedha to each other, so that pairing is examined on its own terms whatever a sheet totals. Older manuals treat the whole exercise as a filter and never a finding. What they want examined afterwards is the seventh house, the condition of its lord, where Jupiter and Venus have fallen, Mars measured from lagna and from Moon alike, and what dasha stands next in either horoscope.
Two vargottama quarters and the Abhijit tail of Uttara Ashadha
The opening quarter, the last three and a third degrees of Sagittarius, takes a Sagittarius navamsa, so rashi and ninth division agree and the quarter stands vargottama, Jupiter governing both while the Sun keeps the star and dharma is the aim assigned. The second, occupying the first three and a third degrees of Capricorn, is vargottama in its turn: Capricorn over Capricorn, Saturn on either side, with artha for its aim. Two undivided quarters running consecutively, one on each side of the Sankranti, is a structure only a few nakshatras possess.
Past that the ninth parts move forward. The third quarter, running in Capricorn from 3°20’ onward as far as 6°40’, draws an Aquarius navamsa under the aim of kama; Saturn is retained but traded out of earth into air, and commentaries put the organising, federating, publicly answerable face of this star there. The fourth covers the stretch between Capricorn 6°40’ and the tenth degree, draws Pisces under moksha, and returns the ninth part to Jupiter once Saturn has held it through two quarters.
That closing quarter carries something no other quarter of any nakshatra carries. Abhijit, the intercalary twenty-eighth star, is assembled from the final 3°20’ of Uttara Ashadha together with the opening fraction of Shravana, so a Moon between 6°40’ and 10°00’ of Capricorn falls inside Abhijit wherever the twenty-eight-fold reckoning is in use — in Kalachakra, in Sarvatobhadra, and in the dasha schemes built on that count. Under the ordinary twenty-seven-fold division nothing shifts; under the other, the quarter answers to Hari instead of to the All-Gods.
Observances traditionally kept for Uttara Ashadha and the All-Gods
What is kept for this star follows its ruler. Sunday is the day observed; the Aditya recitations and the solar hymns are taken up at daybreak and during the Sun’s hora; copper is the metal the almanacs assign it, so copper vessels, wheat and saffron cloth are the customary gifts. Makara Sankranti falls within the band, and households that keep this star commonly attach the bathing, sesame and jaggery of that festival to it as well.
The deity brings a practice of its own. Because the All-Gods are invited into the rites for the departed, tarpana and the yearly shraddha are traditionally linked to this nakshatra, and some families fix the observance to the Moon’s next passage through the segment each month. Reciting the Vishvedeva invocations, and feeding a gathering rather than one guest, are the two forms named most frequently for it — a shared offering for a deity that is itself a company.
In muhurta this star is graded dhruva, the stable class, and elections lifted from that class are meant for undertakings expected to stay put rather than to move. Abhijit muhurta, named for the intercalary star this band helps compose, is the short stretch around local noon that almanacs mark as clear of the usual obstructions. The writers who prescribe any of this attach no outcome to it. It is set down as observance, and as a means of holding the star in view each time the almanac reaches it.
How an Uttara Ashadha placement is actually read
The first question is which body occupies the band. A Moon in it gives Uttara Ashadha for the janma nakshatra, and a great deal follows from that alone: Vimsottari begins in the six-year solar period, the balance at birth measured from 296°40’ against the Moon’s own longitude; the human grade, the mongoose, the Antya current and the stomach rajju are all read off this placement whenever a comparison is made; and the nine-fold tara reckoning that governs daily timing and muhurta selection begins its count at this star.
The internal boundary then does real work. At twenty-eight degrees of Sagittarius the Moon answers to Jupiter for the rashi and to the Sun for the star, two grahas the tables regard as friends. At five degrees of Capricorn it keeps the Sun for the star and hands the rashi over to Saturn, leaving a reader holding two dispositors on poor terms with each other. A single asterism, two rashi lords, two daily readings, two sets of sign-based columns for a match, and a distinctly different tone.
Where something other than the Moon holds the band, the Sun stands as its star lord, and three things get weighed at once: where the Sun stands by house, how well placed it is, and how near the occupant has drawn to it. Such a graha is expected to speak most audibly while a solar period or sub-period runs, and if it lies close enough, combustion is settled before anything else is claimed for it. From there a practitioner marks the house this segment occupies counted from lagna, which of the four quarters carries the graha, whether that quarter is one of the two vargottama ones, and whether the Sun itself is in a condition to deliver what the tradition credits to this band.

Questions about Uttara Ashadha
Which rashis does Uttara Ashadha nakshatra cover?
The band runs from Sagittarius 26°40’ through to Capricorn 10°00’. Its first quarter alone, three and a third degrees, lies in Jupiter’s sign, and ten degrees sit in Saturn’s. Since the Sun owns the entire length, a chart crosses into a new rashi at thirty degrees of Sagittarius with no change of star lord at all, which is why the precise longitude governs every column drawn from the sign.
What deity governs Uttara Ashadha, and what does the elephant tusk stand for?
The presiding power is the Vishvedevas, the All-Gods, a class rather than an individual, invoked together and given a share of the offering as a body; Puranic lists count ten of them. They are also seated in the rites for the departed. The emblem is an elephant’s tusk, with a squared plank beside it in some tables — ivory being the part of a creature that outlasts it, and so an image of what is settled and hard to reverse.
Why does the mongoose yoni of Uttara Ashadha matter in matching?
Because this is the only nakshatra assigned the mongoose. Every other yoni animal comes as a paired male and female star, so an identical-animal result is simply unavailable here and the yoni column can never return its full award, whatever the rest of the sheet shows. The serpent, held by Rohini and Mrigashira, is its stated adversary, which puts those two at the hostile end of that same column.
Are any quarters of Uttara Ashadha vargottama, and where does Abhijit fall?
Two are. The first quarter carries a Sagittarius navamsa inside Sagittarius, and the second a Capricorn navamsa inside Capricorn, so both repeat their sign in the ninth division, one on each side of the Sankranti point. The fourth quarter, from 6°40’ to 10°00’ of Capricorn, supplies the bulk of Abhijit, the intercalary twenty-eighth star used in Kalachakra, in Sarvatobhadra and in the dasha systems built on that count.
Which birth stars rank closest to Uttara Ashadha in ashtakoota?
Computed around the whole circle, the nearest are Uttara Bhadrapada, then Pushya, Purva Bhadrapada, Ashwini and Anuradha. All five differ from this star in pulse division, and since that column carries the largest weight, much of each total traces to it. Purva Bhadrapada shares the stomach rajju from its descending arc, and Punarvasu stands as vedha to this star, so the shortlist narrows a field without settling it.
