In Hindi, the Sun is सूर्य (Surya), and older texts also call it Ravi, Aditya and Bhanu. Jyotish treats the Sun as the fixed reference of the whole system: it marks the year by its passage through the twelve signs, the seasons by its swing north and south, and the condition of other planets by how close they stand to it. Below are its governance in Parashara's scheme, its dignities and friendships, its monthly transit, the practices tradition attaches to it, and its reading in each house.

What the Sun governs: the soul and the throne

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) gives each graha a governance, and the first is the largest: the Sun is the soul (atma) of all beings. In the royal cabinet it is the king, sharing the throne with the Moon as queen. From those seats follow its karaka roles: the father, authority and government, vitality, and reputation, the light by which a person is seen. Classical lists of house significators also make it karaka of the 1st, 9th and 10th houses: the body, the father and the public career.

A royal temperament: male, fiery and sattvic

The Sun is male and sattvic, and the wider tradition gives it fire, although the BPHS element verse names elements only for Mars through Saturn. Its sattva is the purity of light rather than softness, which is why it still counts among the natural malefics (krura): its harshness is that of noon, which dries and exposes. BPHS sketches a square-built figure with honey-coloured eyes, a bilious (pitta) constitution, clean habits and thin hair, and gives the Sun the bones, the pungent taste, the temple and the ayana, the half-year of its northward or southward course.

Dignity: Aries, Libra, Leo and the southern sky

The Sun reaches deepest exaltation at 10° Aries and deepest debilitation at 10° Libra. The pair follows the solar year: the sidereal Sun enters Aries in mid-April, the season of Mesha Sankranti and spring new-year festivals, and Libra in mid-October, when northern daylight is shrinking. Leo is its only own sign, with the first twenty degrees as mooltrikona.

Its directional strength (dig bala) peaks in the 10th house, the south, where it stands at midday, although Brihat Jataka makes it lord of the east, where it rises: one scheme names where the Sun is born, the other where it is most powerful.

Friends, neutrals and enemies of the Sun

In BPHS natural friendship the Sun counts the Moon, Mars and Jupiter as friends, treats Mercury as neutral, and regards Venus and Saturn as enemies. The queen, the commander and the minister all serve the throne; Mercury, never more than about 28° from the Sun, is an attendant held at an even distance; Saturn, the servant and in myth the Sun's own son, stands at the opposite pole of the court. Parashara then adds temporary friendship from a chart's actual placements, so these natural relations are only the first layer.

Aspect, nakshatras and the six-year period

The Sun casts only the 7th-house aspect every graha shares. It rules Krittika, whose deity is Agni, Uttara Phalguni, presided over by Aryaman, god of contracts and patronage, and Uttara Ashadha, given to the Vishvadevas. Its Vimshottari mahadasha is the shortest at six years; the site's separate Surya mahadasha guide covers that period.

The Sun in transit: a sign a month

The Sun spends about one month in each sign, and each ingress is a sankranti; the solar months of the Hindu calendar begin there, Makar Sankranti in mid-January being the best known. Counted from the natal Moon, Phaladeepika makes its transit favourable through the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses. Transit texts add vedha, the obstruction of a good transit by a planet in a paired house, from which the Sun and Saturn, father and son, are exempt.

Surya in myth: the chariot and the shadow

In the Puranas Surya is the son of the sage Kashyapa and of Aditi, one of the Adityas, crossing the sky in a seven-horse chariot driven by Aruna, the dawn. His consort Sanjna, unable to bear his heat, left her shadow Chhaya in her place, and from Chhaya Shani was born; the friction between Sun and Saturn in the friendship table carries that story. In the divisional charts the Sun is studied in the dashamsha (D10) for career and in the dwadashamsha (D12) for the father.

Upaya: traditional practices for the Sun

The Sun's practices begin at dawn. The most common is arghya, offering water to the rising Sun from a copper vessel, often with a Sunday fast or a meal without salt. People recite the beej mantra Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah or the Aditya Hridayam, the hymn the Ramayana gives to the sage Agastya, give wheat, jaggery or copper on Sundays, and show patient respect to the father and to elders in authority.

Ruby (manikya) is the Sun's traditional gem association. Wearing one is a personal and traditional choice, not something this page recommends, and no gem replaces medical, financial or legal advice.

Surya in the twelve houses

Classical readings of the graha in each house, counted from the ascendant. They describe tendencies the texts associate with the placement; a real chart is read as a whole, with the sign, aspects and dasha.

  1. 1st house

In the 1st house the Sun is read as a visible, self-directed personality with pride and a quick temper; the rising sign shows how gracefully that pride is carried.

  2. 2nd house

In the 2nd the Sun is linked with family resources and authoritative speech, and older texts caution that money here can be drawn away through dealings with the state.

  3. 3rd house

The 3rd is one of the Sun's favoured houses: courage, initiative and the ability to overcome opponents, with some distance among siblings.

  4. 4th house

In the 4th, where its directional strength is lowest, tradition reads an unsettled home, distance from inherited property and a wish to build a home of one's own.

  5. 5th house

In the 5th the Sun is associated with an independent intellect and a taste for mantra or politics; questions about children are left to the full chart.

  6. 6th house

The 6th suits the Sun in classical reading: good digestion, victory over rivals, and a capacity for command in demanding roles.

  7. 7th house

In the 7th the Sun is read as an ego that meets its match in partnership, with friction to be weighed against the rest of the chart.

  8. 8th house

In the 8th the Sun is linked with research, hidden matters and inheritance, a placement said to test vitality and to ask for moderate habits.

  9. 9th house

In the 9th the Sun is connected with dharma, pilgrimage and reverence for teachers, alongside an independent stance toward the father's views.

  10. 10th house

The 10th gives the Sun full directional strength: tradition links it with authority, public recognition and work connected with government.

  11. 11th house

In the 11th the Sun is read as gains through influential people and steady fulfilment of aims, with a reserved manner among friends.

  12. 12th house

In the 12th the Sun is associated with expenditure, life abroad or in seclusion and a quieter self-image, and a cooler bond with the father.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sun called in Hindi?

The Hindi name is Surya. Sanskrit texts also use Ravi, Aditya and Bhanu, and Sunday is Ravivar, the day named after the Sun.

Is the Sun a benefic or a malefic in Vedic astrology?

BPHS lists the Sun among the natural malefics, but it is the mildest of them and also sattvic. Where it rules good houses for an ascendant it functions helpfully, so its nature alone settles nothing.

Which day belongs to the Sun?

Sunday. Traditional Sunday practices include offering water to the rising Sun, reciting a Surya mantra, a light fast, and giving wheat, jaggery or copper in charity.

What is the Sun's gemstone?

Ruby (manikya) is the traditional gem association. Wearing one is a personal and traditional choice that this page does not recommend, and it is no substitute for medical, financial or legal advice.

How long does the Sun stay in one sign?

About a month. Each entry into a new sign is a sankranti, and the twelve crossings together make up the solar year used by many Hindu calendars.

Why is the Sun weak in Libra?

Libra is opposite Aries, where the Sun is exalted, and BPHS places its deepest fall at 10° Libra. The sidereal Sun reaches Libra in autumn, when northern days are shortening, and Libra's lord Venus is a natural enemy of the Sun.
