In Hindi astrology Venus is शुक्र (Shukra), a word meaning bright or clear; it is also called Bhargava, after the lineage of the sage Bhrigu, and Kavi, the poet. Venus outshines every point in the night sky except the Moon, and jyotish gives it the bright side of life: love and marriage, comfort, beauty, music, art and the desire that keeps life renewing itself. The sections below cover its governance, its dignities, its friendships, its transit and the marriage calendar, its myth, the practices linked with it, and its house placements.

Potency, desire and the poet in the cabinet

BPHS gives Venus governance of shukra in its literal sense, the vital and reproductive essence, which is why its name also means seed. In the royal cabinet it is a minister alongside Jupiter, and in myth it is the preceptor of the asuras. Its karaka roles are the spouse and marriage, vitality and desire, comforts and vehicles, the arts and music, and beauty, and classical lists make it the natural significator of the 7th house.

BPHS gives it the reproductive tissue, the sour taste, the bedroom as its abode, a fortnight as its time and vasanta, spring, as its season, while flowering plants are its trees.

Female, watery and rajasic

Venus is a female graha and a natural benefic, rajasic in guna and, in the BPHS element verse, the planet of water. Water binds and softens; rajas moves toward what it likes. Together they describe attraction, the pull that draws people and things together and makes them pleasant to keep. BPHS pictures Venus as charming and radiant, with lovely eyes and curling hair, phlegmatic and windy in constitution, and a poet by temperament.

Dignity: Pisces, Virgo, Taurus and Libra

Venus is exalted at 27° Pisces and debilitated at 27° Virgo. It owns Taurus and Libra, and its mooltrikona is the first fifteen degrees of Libra. Exaltation in Jupiter's Pisces is read as love refined into devotion; fall in Virgo, the sign where Mercury is exalted, as pleasure uneasy under constant analysis.

Directional strength comes in the 4th house, the north, the house of home and comfort, and Brihat Jataka makes Venus lord of the south-east. Venus in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra forms Malavya yoga, one of the five mahapurusha yogas.

Venus's friends: Mercury and Saturn

In BPHS natural friendship Venus counts Mercury and Saturn as friends, treats Mars and Jupiter as neutral, and regards the Sun and Moon as enemies. Saturn returns the friendship, which is why Saturn becomes the most helpful planet, a yogakaraka, for Taurus and Libra ascendants, the two signs Venus rules. Its coolness toward the luminaries is read as the courtier's distance from the throne.

Aspect, nakshatras and the longest dasha

Venus casts only the 7th-house aspect. Its nakshatras are Bharani, given to Yama, Purva Phalguni, given to Bhaga, god of shared fortune and marital happiness, and Purva Ashadha, given to the waters (Apas). Its Vimshottari mahadasha is twenty years, the longest of the nine, and a separate Shukra mahadasha guide on the site covers that period in detail.

Venus in transit and the wedding calendar

Venus usually spends about a month in a sign, longer around its retrograde phase every nineteen months or so. It never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, so it appears as a morning or an evening star and periodically disappears in combustion. Muhurta practice avoids weddings while Venus, or Jupiter, is combust, a spell often called shukra asta. Counted from the natal Moon, Phaladeepika gives Venus the widest favourable list of any graha: the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th houses, leaving the 6th mixed and the 7th unfavourable.

Shukracharya, the teacher who could revive the dead

In the Puranas Shukra is a son of the sage Bhrigu and the guru of the asuras, and he alone knew the Mritasanjivani vidya, the art of restoring the dead to life. Kacha, son of Brihaspati, was sent to learn it as his student, and a story of love and refusal followed. When the asura king Bali pledged land to Vishnu disguised as the dwarf Vamana, Shukra tried to block the gift and lost an eye. The myths make Venus a teacher of renewal who sides with life in the world.

Upaya: practices associated with Venus

Friday is Venus's day. Worship of Lakshmi is the usual devotional route, while BPHS names Shachi, Indra's consort, as its presiding deity. The mantra Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah is recited, and white cloth, rice, sugar, curd or perfume are given on Fridays. Respect toward women and one's partner, cleanliness and moderation in pleasure complete the practice. Diamond (vajra or heera) is the traditional gem association; wearing one is a personal and traditional choice this page does not advise, and it is never a substitute for medical, financial or legal advice.

Shukra in the twelve houses

Classical readings of the graha in each house, counted from the ascendant. They describe tendencies the texts associate with the placement; a real chart is read as a whole, with the sign, aspects and dasha.

  1. 1st house

Venus in the 1st is read as grace, an attractive presence and a love of comfort and beauty, with charm in company and a gentle temperament.

  2. 2nd house

In the 2nd, Venus is linked with fine food, a sweet voice, family wealth and earnings through art, beauty, luxury goods or hospitality.

  3. 3rd house

In the 3rd, Venus is read as artistic communication and pleasant ties with siblings, though classical texts find its drive softer here.

  4. 4th house

In the 4th, Venus holds directional strength: tradition links it with a beautiful home, vehicles, comfort and emotional contentment.

  5. 5th house

In the 5th, Venus is associated with romance, creative talent, a love of entertainment and affectionate bonds with children.

  6. 6th house

In the 6th, Venus is read as tension between comfort and duty; texts advise moderation, though service in healing or the arts can flourish.

  7. 7th house

In the 7th, its own house of signification, Venus is linked with attraction to partnership and refined shared tastes; texts also caution against overindulgence.

  8. 8th house

In the 8th, Venus is treated kindly by classical texts: inheritance, long life and comfort arriving through partners or unexpected sources.

  9. 9th house

In the 9th, Venus is read as fortune through art or partnership, generosity, respect for teachers and guests, and travel for pleasure or pilgrimage.

  10. 10th house

In the 10th, Venus is associated with careers in the arts, design, beauty, hospitality or diplomacy, with recognition earned through taste.

  11. 11th house

In the 11th, Venus is read as plentiful gains, pleasant and loyal friendships, helpful associates and a real enjoyment of social life and celebration.

  12. 12th house

In the 12th, Venus is one of the few benefics tradition favours there: restful sleep, private pleasures, travel and spending on beauty.

Frequently asked questions

What is Venus called in Hindi?

Venus is Shukra in Hindi, and Friday is Shukravar after it. Sanskrit texts also call it Bhargava, Bhrigu and Kavi, the poet.

Which day belongs to Venus?

Friday. Lakshmi worship, a Shukra mantra, a Friday fast for some, and gifts of white cloth, rice, sugar or perfume are the traditional observances.

Why is Venus important for marriage in Vedic astrology?

Venus is the natural significator of the spouse and the 7th house, so its sign, house and strength are read alongside the 7th house and its lord. It describes tastes in partnership rather than fixing any outcome.

What is Venus's gemstone?

Diamond is the traditional gem association. Wearing one is a personal and traditional choice that this page does not recommend, and it does not replace medical, financial or legal advice.

Why are weddings avoided when Venus is combust?

Muhurta practice wants Venus, the significator of marriage, visible and strong at a wedding. When it is too close to the Sun it is combust, so many families wait until it reappears.

How long does Venus stay in one sign?

About a month, and longer when it turns retrograde, which happens roughly every nineteen months. It always stays within about 47° of the Sun.
