Why a vehicle gets a muhurat of its own
The muhurta manuals group a vehicle with the things that carry us — the chariot, the palanquin, the horse and the cart in older times — and judge the day for acquiring one much as they judge a day for setting out on a journey. The emphasis is on safe movement and steady use, so the conditions favour nakshatras linked with motion and quick results rather than the fixed stars preferred for a house.
A purchase is not one of the samskaras, the life-cycle rites. That matters for the calendar: the long seasonal pauses that stop weddings and house-warmings do not, by themselves, stop the purchase of a car or bike. The list on this page therefore runs through most of the year, thinning out only where the nakshatra, tithi or weekday conditions fail, during Pitru Paksha, and in an intercalary month.
Nakshatras favoured for buying a vehicle
Thirteen lunar mansions are used. Five belong to the movable (chara) group — Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishtha and Shatabhisha — whose very name points to travel. Three are light or swift (kshipra) — Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta — and are taken for undertakings that should bear fruit quickly. Four are soft (mridu) — Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati — and Rohini completes the list.
Pushya has a special standing for purchases of every kind. When it falls on a Thursday the day is popularly called Guru Pushya, and on a Sunday Ravi Pushya, and both are widely sought for buying gold, property and vehicles alike. Because the Moon spends roughly a day in each nakshatra, the favoured star is usually present for only part of a date, which is why the table on this page gives a time span and not just the date.
Tithis and weekdays
Every lunar day is accepted except the Rikta tithis — Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi, the fourth, ninth and fourteenth of either fortnight — and Amavasya, the new-moon day. The Rikta tithis take their name from the word for “empty”, and the texts avoid them for anything one hopes will be full and lasting. Some calendars prune the list further, for example by also leaving out Dwitiya, Saptami or Dwadashi, which is one reason almanacs do not agree date for date.
Tuesday and Saturday are avoided. Tuesday belongs to Mars, associated with fire, accidents and machinery under strain, and Saturday to Saturn, associated with delay and wear; neither is wanted for the first run of a new vehicle. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are all accepted, with Thursday and Friday especially popular.
Pitru Paksha, adhik maas and the seasons
Two periods are left out. Pitru Paksha, the fortnight devoted to the ancestors before Sharad Navratri, is kept free of new purchases in most North Indian homes, and the list shows no dates inside it. An intercalary month (adhik maas, also called mala maas), when the calendar adds a lunar month to keep pace with the seasons, is avoided for new beginnings in general.
Kharmas, Chaturmas and the combustion of Jupiter or Venus are not applied to this list, because the classical restrictions tied to them concern marriage, the household rites and other samskaras. Some families prefer to avoid Kharmas for a big purchase all the same; if that is your custom, simply skip the dates from mid-December to mid-January and from mid-March to mid-April. Festival days such as Dhanteras, Dussehra, Akshaya Tritiya and Gudi Padwa are treated by many as self-auspicious (abujh) for buying a vehicle whatever the other limbs say.
Taking delivery, and the checks that are personal
Within a listed day, the time spans shown on this page are limited to daylight, when a vehicle is actually bought, registered or driven home. Many buyers narrow the span again by avoiding Rahu Kaal and choosing a favourable Choghadiya; both change every day and are shown on the Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya pages of this site for your own city.
A priest choosing the hour for one person also looks at the Moon’s position that day from the buyer’s Moon sign (chandra bala) and counts the day’s nakshatra from the buyer’s birth star (tara bala). Those checks depend on the buyer’s chart, so a general list cannot apply them. Treat the dates here as the days on which the calendar conditions are met, and the final choice as yours or your family priest’s.
How to read the dates on this page
The panchang day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, and every date is computed for New Delhi. Tithis and nakshatras change at exact moments, so the qualifying hours on the same date shift a little in other cities, and a date that only just meets the conditions in Delhi may not meet them far to the east or south.
Each listed date also appears in a published panchang’s vehicle-purchase list for New Delhi. Dates that meet the conditions here but are left out of that list, usually because it applies a narrower set of tithis or nakshatras, are not shown, so the table errs on the side of fewer, well-supported dates.
Vehicle Purchase Muhurat 2026: frequently asked questions
Which are the best dates to buy a car or bike in 2026?
In 2026, the dates meeting the classical conditions for New Delhi fall in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December. The month-by-month table on this page lists every 2026 date meeting the classical conditions for New Delhi, with the span when the nakshatra and tithi conditions hold. Dates with Pushya nakshatra, especially on a Thursday, are among the most sought after.
Can I buy a vehicle during Kharmas or Chaturmas?
The classical restrictions of Kharmas and Chaturmas concern marriage and the household rites, so this list does not exclude them for a vehicle. Families who follow a stricter custom simply skip those weeks.
Why are there no dates during Pitru Paksha?
Pitru Paksha is the fortnight for honouring the ancestors, and most North Indian families avoid starting anything new or buying a new vehicle in it. The list leaves the whole fortnight out.
Is Tuesday or Saturday bad for buying a vehicle?
Both are traditionally avoided for a new vehicle — Tuesday is ruled by Mars and Saturday by Saturn. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are accepted.
Does the delivery time matter as well as the date?
Yes. The listed span shows when the nakshatra and tithi conditions hold during daylight. Within it, many buyers avoid Rahu Kaal and choose a good Choghadiya for taking delivery.
Are Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya good for buying a vehicle?
Many families treat festival days such as Dhanteras, Dussehra and Akshaya Tritiya as self-auspicious for a purchase. They appear in the table only when they also meet the conditions used here.
Do these dates apply outside New Delhi?
The general picture holds across India, but nakshatra and tithi changes are fixed moments and sunrise differs by place, so the qualifying hours move a little from city to city.
