Rohini is the fourth of the twenty-seven nakshatras, and the one stretch of sky the Moon rules as its own star while standing inside its sign of exaltation. It runs from 10°00’ to 23°20’ of Taurus, fixed earth owned by Venus, and its marker in the sky is the ruddy first-magnitude star that western catalogues list as Aldebaran, the eye of the bull. Sanskrit lists give it Brahma — Prajapati, the shaper of creatures — as presiding deity and a chariot as emblem. The name is built on a root carrying the senses of rising, growing and reddening, which is why commentaries treat this band as the place where an intention stops being an idea and starts having a body.
Where Rohini sits, and what the name carries
Every degree of Rohini lies in a fixed earth sign owned by Venus, while the star itself answers to the Moon. That double signature — Venus holding the ground, the Moon holding the star — is the first thing an astrologer notes here. Taurus is also the sign in which the Moon is exalted, though the exact degree of deep exaltation falls earlier, back in Krittika, so Rohini inherits the exalting sign without owning the exaltation point itself.
Older handbooks assign this segment the eastern direction, the element of earth, the colour white and, in the scheme that maps the twenty-seven stars onto the limbs of the cosmic being, the forehead. Its full extent is thirteen degrees and twenty minutes, cut into four quarters of three degrees twenty minutes each. Because the Moon governs the star, the ten-year lunar period in the Vimsottari reckoning is measured out from wherever the Moon happens to stand within that stretch, so two people born a day apart under Rohini can open life with very different amounts of it left to run.
Brahma, Prajapati and the chariot of Rohini
Presiding over Rohini is Brahma in his aspect as Prajapati, the lord of creatures, who gives shape and name to what is still formless. Barely any other nakshatra is placed under the maker himself, and the tradition makes something of the pairing: a deity whose whole work is fashioning, set over a band of fixed earth where fashioning can actually hold its shape. Where the fiery star before it burns matter away, this one is read as putting matter on — filling out, ripening, taking a thing as far as substance.
The emblem is a chariot, and many almanacs draw it as an ox-drawn cart already loaded. Read closely, the picture is not about travel for its own sake but about carriage: something of value has been produced and now has to be moved from the ground that grew it to the place that needs it. Cattle, grain, cloth and the road between field and market all sit inside that image, which is why agricultural and mercantile themes cling to this star throughout the older texts.
The puranic story supplies the other half of the reputation. Among the daughters of Daksha given to the Moon, this one held him longest, and the resentment that followed brought the curse out of which the waxing and waning of the lunar month is explained. Astrologers still reach for the tale when they describe Rohini as the point in the zodiac the Moon is least willing to leave.
Manushya gana, serpent yoni and Antya nadi in Rohini
Rohini belongs to the Manushya gana, the human class, which it shares with Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and the two Phalgunis among others. Nothing in that class is angelic or demonic in the classification’s own terms; the texts describe it as mixed, sociable and answerable to obligation. Set beside Brahma and the loaded cart, the gana is usually read as a temperament that measures itself by what it has finished building and by who depends on it.
The animal assigned here is the serpent, which Rohini shares with exactly one other nakshatra, Mrigashira, sitting immediately after it in the same sign. Yoni in the matching system stands for instinctive rapport rather than character, and the serpent stars are described as watchful, unhurried and slow to be startled out of a settled position. The pulse division is Antya, the third and last of the three, and it matters chiefly at the matching table, where two charts falling in one nadi forfeit that column outright however well the rest agrees.
One further grouping is worth carrying. Rohini, Hasta and Shravana form the Moon-lorded triad of the Vimsottari scheme, and the same three are marked rajasic in the guna tables that older writers append to their nakshatra chapters — active, appetitive, attached to what it holds rather than indifferent to it.
The work classical texts tie to Rohini
The occupational lists attached to this star are unusually concrete. Cultivation, cattle, dairy, seed, orchards and land itself head nearly every version of them, which follows straight from a Moon-ruled star lying in Venus’s fixed earth. Around that core the texts add trade in whatever the land yields — grain, cloth, sugar, flowers, food prepared and sold — and with it the grading, storing and pricing that moving such goods demands.
A second family of meanings comes from the Venusian half of the picture: dress, ornament, cosmetics, interiors and the crafts that make ordinary objects pleasant to look at. Classical descriptions of people born under this star also single out the voice, counting them among poets and effective speakers, so performance, teaching and song sit in the Rohini column alongside the agricultural material. Astrologers treat the whole list as a field of tendencies to test against the tenth house, its lord and the running period, never as a trade the chart hands anyone.
Rohini in ashtakoota matching
The eight-koota method compares two charts almost entirely through the Moon’s star and sign, so a Rohini chart brings its Manushya gana, serpent yoni, Antya nadi and Taurus rashi to the table and little else. Scored against all twenty-seven, the pairings that come out strongest for Rohini are Purva Bhadrapada, Anuradha, Mrigashira, Pushya and Shatabhisha. Mrigashira answers on the animal column because it carries the same serpent; Purva Bhadrapada answers on the human gana; the others gain on sign friendship and on the pulse division.
Rohini falls in the Kanta or neck rajju, on its ascending arc, together with Hasta and Shravana. Matchmakers keep the two birth stars out of a single rajju segment, so a Rohini chart set against a Hasta or Shravana chart gets extra scrutiny at that column even when the arithmetic elsewhere looks generous. On the other side of the ledger, the classical marriage literature names Rohini among the stars where bride and groom sharing one birth star is not by itself treated as an objection.
What the koota total does is shorten a list. What it does not do is settle anything, and the same texts that print the table insist on reading the seventh house and its lord, the condition of Venus and Jupiter, the placement of Mars from Moon and ascendant, and the periods each chart is about to enter. Practitioners use the Rohini figures as a first screen and then argue with them.
Rohini pada by pada, from Aries navamsa to Cancer navamsa
The opening quarter, 10°00’ to 13°20’, takes an Aries navamsa and belongs to the dharma aim. Mars runs the ninth-part while the Moon runs the star, and the tradition reads the mixture as the loaded chariot getting itself moving: appetite for a start, impatience with preliminaries, and a blunter manner than the rest of Rohini shows.
The second quarter, 13°20’ to 16°40’, falls in a Taurus navamsa. Sign and ninth-part agree, so this quarter alone in the whole nakshatra is vargottama, and planets standing there are read as carrying their nature intact out of the birth chart and into the ninth division. Its aim is artha, and the classical reading is the most acquisitive and most stationary part of the star — what is gathered here is meant to stay gathered.
The third quarter, 16°40’ to 20°00’, moves into a Gemini navamsa under Mercury with the kama aim, layering talk, curiosity and dealing over the earthier base; this is where the poetry and the salesmanship in the Rohini lists usually get located. The closing quarter, 20°00’ to 23°20’, takes a Cancer navamsa and the moksha aim, and here the Moon governs star and ninth-part together while sitting in its own sign. Astrologers read that last stretch as the most domestic of the four, the most bound to memory and the most easily moved by what it remembers.
Observances traditionally linked to Rohini and Brahma
Rohini is counted among the four dhruva or fixed stars, alongside the three Uttara nakshatras, and muhurta practice puts that group to a particular use: sowing, planting trees, laying foundations, installing images and beginning anything meant to outlast the person beginning it. Almanac writers also watch the Sun’s own passage through this segment in late May, the spell that village calendars call the Rohini heat, and time field work around it.
Devotional practice attached to the star is mostly lunar. Monday is kept, white things are given away — milk, rice, pale cloth, jasmine and other white flowers — and the Moon’s mantra is recited during lunar periods or on the day each month when the Moon returns to this segment. Jain households keep a Rohini vrata on that monthly return. Since the presiding deity is Brahma, who has almost no temples of his own anywhere, the observance here is usually offered as recitation and study rather than as a temple visit.
The tradition also places Krishna’s birth with the Moon in Rohini, which is why Janmashtami calendars watch this star closely and why cowherd imagery attaches to it twice over. These practices are kept as discipline and remembrance; the classical writers who prescribe them attach no guaranteed result to them, and they are best read the same way now.
Reading Rohini in a working chart
The first question is which planet is actually in the segment. If it is the Moon, Rohini is the birth nakshatra and it organises everything downstream: the Vimsottari sequence opens in a lunar period whose unspent balance is measured from the Moon’s exact longitude inside the thirteen degrees twenty minutes, and gana, yoni, nadi and rajju for any matching exercise are all read from here. Tarabala for daily and muhurta work is counted outward from Rohini as the first tara.
If some other planet holds the segment, the reading changes shape. The Moon becomes a second dispositor for it, so the Moon’s house, its aspects and its waxing or waning strength colour whatever sits there, and the planet tends to speak most audibly during lunar periods and sub-periods. The Sun crossing Rohini, Venus standing in its own sign but in the Moon’s star, and Saturn parked in this stretch are each read differently, but the common thread is that Venus supplies the ground and the Moon supplies the weather over it.
Beyond that, practitioners check the Moon’s ashtakavarga and its paksha bala before leaning on anything Rohini seems to add, note which house the segment falls in from the ascendant, and see whether the planet sits in the vargottama second quarter or in one of the three that change sign in the ninth division. The star describes a texture; the houses and the periods decide where and when that texture becomes visible.
The four padas of Rohini
| Pada | Navamsa | Rashi | Varna | Aim | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries | Taurus | Vaishya | Dharma | O |
| 2 | Taurus | Taurus | Vaishya | Artha | Va |
| 3 | Gemini | Taurus | Vaishya | Kama | Vi |

Questions about Rohini
What part of Taurus does Rohini nakshatra cover?
Rohini runs from 10°00’ to 23°20’ of sidereal Taurus, thirteen degrees twenty minutes divided into four quarters. Every degree of it lies in Venus’s fixed earth sign while the star itself is ruled by the Moon. Taurus is the Moon’s sign of exaltation, though the deep exaltation degree falls earlier, in Krittika. The bright marker of the band is the star catalogued as Aldebaran.
Which deity and symbol belong to Rohini nakshatra?
Classical lists give Brahma, addressed as Prajapati the lord of creatures, as the presiding deity of Rohini, and a chariot — often drawn as a loaded ox-cart — as its emblem. Taken together the pair points at making something and then carrying it: form given to raw material, then moved to where it is wanted. Cattle, grain and cultivation follow from the same picture.
Which birth stars does ashtakoota rank highest for Rohini?
Scored across all twenty-seven, the strongest pairings for Rohini come out as Purva Bhadrapada, Anuradha, Mrigashira, Pushya and Shatabhisha. Mrigashira shares the serpent yoni and Purva Bhadrapada shares the Manushya gana, so those two gain on the animal and temperament columns. The eight kootas are a screen built from the Moon alone, and classical practice tests any such shortlist against the seventh house, Venus, Mars and the coming periods.
Is any pada of Rohini vargottama?
The second quarter of Rohini, 13°20’ to 16°40’ of Taurus, takes a Taurus navamsa, so sign and ninth-part agree and that quarter alone is vargottama. Planets there carry the same sign into the divisional chart, and astrologers read them as holding their nature steadily rather than shifting register. The other three quarters take Aries, Gemini and Cancer navamsas, changing the ruler standing behind the Moon each time.
What does the Moon in Rohini set up in a chart?
With the Moon in Rohini the star becomes the birth nakshatra, so the Vimsottari sequence opens in a lunar period whose unspent balance is measured from the Moon’s exact position inside the segment. Gana, yoni, the Antya nadi and the neck rajju used in matching are all taken from here, and tarabala for daily timing is counted outward from Rohini. Any other planet in the band takes the Moon as a secondary dispositor.
