Purnima in 2027
The first Purnima of 2027 falls on Friday 22 January 2027 and the last on Monday 13 December 2027.
Among the named full moons of 2027 are Guru Purnima on 18 July 2027 and Kartik Purnima on 14 November 2027.
What Purnima is
Purnima is the tithi during which the Moon moves from 168 to 180 degrees ahead of the Sun, ending at the exact full moon, so the bright disc is at or near its fullest for the whole of it. It closes the waxing fortnight, Shukla paksha. In the North Indian purnimanta calendar it also closes the lunar month, which is why each full moon carries the name of its month: Chaitra Purnima, Vaishakha Purnima and so on through Phalguna.
Many families keep a fast or a Satyanarayan katha on the full moon, bathe in a river at dawn and give in charity. Several full moons are festivals in their own right: Holi follows the Phalguna full moon, Buddha Purnima is the Vaishakha one, Guru Purnima honours teachers in Ashadha, Raksha Bandhan falls on the Shravana full moon, Sharad Purnima marks the Ashwina one and Kartik Purnima is a day of holy baths and lamps.
Which day is listed, and why festivals can differ
A full moon rarely begins at midnight, so each row is the civil day whose dawn in New Delhi finds Purnima already under way; a Purnima squeezed between two dawns, touching neither, is given to the day on which it starts. That is the usual day for a dawn bath and the day's vrat.
Festivals tied to a full moon use their own windows. Holika Dahan needs Purnima at dusk and outside bhadra, and Raksha Bandhan the afternoon of Purnima outside bhadra, so either may be celebrated a day earlier than the row shows, or at a set hour of that day. The festival pages linked from this site give those windows; this page gives the tithi itself.
Purnima vrat and moonrise
Some households fast until they have seen the rising full moon and offered it water. When Purnima begins in the afternoon or evening, the Moon rises full that same evening, which is why some calendars mark the fast on the day before the one listed here. The start time in the table shows when that is the case: a Purnima that begins before sunset already covers that night's moonrise.
Reading the start and end columns
The end time in each row is the instant of the full moon itself, when the Moon stands exactly opposite the Sun; the start time is when it came within twelve degrees of that point. A Purnima that starts in the small hours and ends late the next night spans almost two civil days, which is when calendars most often disagree about the day of the fast or the dawn bath. Both moments are in Indian Standard Time; readers abroad convert them, and the listed civil day assumes a New Delhi sunrise. A dash in place of a time marks a row whose moment could not be pinned down to the minute; its date link leads to the full panchang for that day.
Purnima 2027: questions
How many Purnimas are there in 2027?
12, from 22 January 2027 to 13 December 2027, counted by the sunrise rule for New Delhi.
What are the last Purnimas of 2027?
The last three are on Friday 15 October 2027 (Ashwina Purnima), Sunday 14 November 2027 (Kartik Purnima), Monday 13 December 2027 (Margashirsha Purnima). The table gives the exact tithi times of each.
Why do some calendars keep the Purnima fast a day earlier?
A full-moon fast is often broken after seeing the rising Moon. If Purnima begins in the afternoon or evening, that night's moonrise already falls in Purnima, so some calendars mark the fast on that earlier day. This page lists the day at whose sunrise Purnima runs.
When are Guru Purnima and Kartik Purnima in 2027?
In 2027, by the sunrise rule for New Delhi: Guru Purnima on Sunday 18 July 2027, Kartik Purnima on Sunday 14 November 2027. Festival pages give each one's own puja windows.
Are Holi and Raksha Bandhan on the Purnima date shown here?
Not always. Holika Dahan needs Purnima at dusk and Raksha Bandhan its afternoon, both outside bhadra, so either can move to the evening before or within the day. Their own pages on this site give the dates and windows.
