About Vasant Panchami: meaning, rules and customs
Saraswati, spring and the meaning of the day
Vasant Panchami belongs first to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts, pictured in white, seated on a lotus or a swan and playing the veena. A popular telling says that when Brahma had made the world it lay silent, until Saraswati appeared with her veena and gave it sound and speech, and many people therefore keep the day as her appearance day. Students, teachers, musicians and writers all treat it as their own festival.
The day also announces the season in its name. Mustard fields across the northern plains turn yellow, the cold begins to ease, and yellow becomes the colour of clothes, food and flowers. Some traditions honour Kamadeva, the god of love, and his consort Rati, since spring (Vasant) is Kama’s companion in the old poetry. In Braj the day opens the long Holi season, about forty days before the festival of colours, and at Prayagraj it is one of the main bathing days of the Magh Mela.
How the date is fixed: Magha Shukla Panchami in the forenoon
Vasant Panchami is the Panchami, the fifth tithi or lunar day, of Shukla paksha (the waxing fortnight) in the month of Magha. Because it sits in the bright fortnight, North Indian purnimanta calendars and the amanta calendars of the west and south give it the same month name, so there is no labelling confusion. In the Gregorian calendar it usually arrives between late January and mid-February.
The governing window is purvahna, the forenoon from sunrise to midday, because Saraswati Puja is a morning rite; the festival is kept on the day Panchami prevails during that window. A tithi can begin at any hour, though, and Panchami sometimes starts late one morning and ends before noon the next, covering both forenoons only in part. Panchang makers then apply their own tie-breaking conventions and occasionally settle on different days, which is why “Basant Panchami kab hai” can have two answers in the same year. The date and puja window given here follow the forenoon rule for New Delhi.
Saraswati Puja vidhi, step by step
The day begins with an early bath, after which many people dress in yellow or white. A low platform is covered with yellow or white cloth and an image of Saraswati is placed on it, often beside a kalash of water crowned with mango leaves. Ganesha is worshipped first; then the goddess receives sandal paste, akshat (unbroken rice), yellow and white flowers such as marigold, incense, a ghee lamp, seasonal fruit including ber (jujube), and yellow sweets like kesari bhat, meethe chawal or boondi.
Students lay their books and pens before the goddess and musicians their instruments, so that the tools of learning share in the blessing. Families chant “Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah” or the hymn that begins “Ya Kundendu”, and close with aarti. In Bengal the morning centres on pushpanjali, the offering of flowers with folded hands, and many students eat nothing until they have made it.
For small children this is the favourite day for vidyarambh, the start of formal learning: a parent or teacher guides the child’s hand to write the first letters, often “Om” or the opening of the alphabet, on a slate or in rice spread on a plate. Telugu families call it akshara abhyasam, and the Gnana Saraswati temple at Basar in Telangana sees long queues for it.
Customs people keep, and what they avoid
Traditionally the day is dressed in yellow and white: clothes, flowers, rice tinted with saffron or turmeric, and sweets. Many families keep the meals sattvik, honour their teachers and give pens, books or school supplies to children who need them. Because Saraswati presides over speech, people try to keep harsh or untrue words off their tongues.
In many Bengali homes the books stay with the goddess for the day and nobody studies; it is the one day when leaving a textbook closed counts as devotion. Many Bengali students also wait to eat kul (ber) until after Saraswati Puja, so that the season’s fruit reaches her first. Popular belief treats the day as an abujh muhurat, auspicious without further checking, for weddings, house-warmings and new ventures, though careful families still consult the panchang.
Basant across India
Bengal, Bihar and Odisha celebrate with Saraswati Puja pandals in every neighbourhood and pujas in nearly every school and college, where students set up and decorate the image themselves and share khichdi as prasad. In Bengal a child’s first writing ceremony is called hate khori, and after the puja the image is immersed in a river or pond.
Punjab greets Basant with kite flying and yellow clothes. In Delhi the dargah of Nizamuddin Auliya keeps a Sufi Basant, with qawwals singing and devotees carrying yellow flowers, a custom traced to the poet Amir Khusrau. In Braj a pole is planted at the spot where the Holika bonfire will burn weeks later, and across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar the flowering mustard gives the whole landscape the festival’s colour.
The astrology of Vasant Panchami
Panchami belongs to the Purna (full) group of tithis, together with Dashami and Purnima, and classical lists such as the Muhurta Chintamani assign it to the Nagas, the serpent deities. On Vasant Panchami the Moon runs 48° to 60° ahead of the Sun, a growing crescent visible in the western sky after sunset, and it usually stands in Kumbha (Aquarius) or Meena (Pisces).
The Sun is normally in Makara (Capricorn), occasionally just into Kumbha. In the classical six-season scheme Magha and Phalguna make up Shishira, the late winter, while Vasant ritu proper belongs to Chaitra and Vaishakha, so the festival heralds spring rather than starting it. Astrologers link learning with Jupiter (Guru) and speech with Mercury (Budha), and many choose the day to begin study, music lessons or writing. Its abujh reputation is popular rather than textual: it is not among the classical three-and-a-half self-auspicious days.

Vasant Panchami 2027: frequently asked questions
When is Vasant Panchami in 2027, and what is the Saraswati Puja muhurat?
Vasant Panchami 2027 falls on Thursday, 11 February 2027 (New Delhi). Vasant Panchami is the Magha Shukla Panchami that holds the forenoon, and the puja is done before midday. The 2027 date, the Panchami start and end times and the puja window for New Delhi are set out near the top of the page.
Why do panchangs sometimes disagree on the Basant Panchami 2027 date?
Panchami seldom starts at sunrise, so it may cover parts of two forenoons. Calendar makers then use differing tie-break conventions; follow the panchang your family or temple relies on.
Why is yellow worn on Basant Panchami?
Yellow is the colour of ripening mustard and of the coming spring, and it runs through the day’s clothes, flowers and sweets. White, Saraswati’s own colour, is also favoured.
Is Vasant Panchami 2027 an abujh muhurat for weddings?
Many communities treat it as self-auspicious and hold weddings without a separate muhurat. Classically it is not one of the three-and-a-half self-auspicious days, so many families still check the panchang.
Does spring actually begin on Vasant Panchami?
Not strictly. In the six-season calendar Magha falls in Shishira, the late winter, and Vasant ritu is Chaitra and Vaishakha. The festival welcomes a spring that is still on its way.
What is vidyarambh, and why is it done on Vasant Panchami?
Vidyarambh is a child’s formal start of learning, when a parent or teacher guides the first letters. Families choose this day because it is Saraswati’s own.
