Akshaya Tritiya 2027: Date, Muhurat and the Day of Undiminishing Merit

Akshaya Tritiya, known as Akha Teej in Rajasthan, is the third lunar day of the bright half of Vaishakha and one of the few days tradition treats as auspicious from sunrise to sunset. Its name means “that which never runs out”, and the charity, worship and fresh starts linked with it all grow from that idea. The 2027 date and forenoon puja window given here have been calculated for New Delhi.

About Akshaya Tritiya: meaning, rules and customs

The meaning of “akshaya” and the stories behind the day

Akshaya means imperishable, something that never wears away. Tradition holds that good done on this tithi, whether japa (the repetition of a mantra), worship or charity, earns merit that does not diminish, so the day is chosen for beginnings that are meant to last. It is one of the sade-teen muhurat, the three and a half self-auspicious days, alongside Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, Vijayadashami and half of Kartika Shukla Pratipada. Many families therefore treat it as an abujh muhurat: a wedding, a griha pravesh (housewarming) or a major purchase can go ahead without fixing a separate time.

The day is traditionally regarded as the start of the Treta Yuga, and many calendars also mark Parashurama Jayanti, the birth of Vishnu’s sixth avatar, on this tithi. Popular retellings add that Sudama reached Dwarka carrying a little bundle of flattened rice for his childhood friend Krishna, that Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata with Ganesha as his scribe, and that Krishna gave the exiled Pandavas and Draupadi the akshaya patra, a vessel whose food never ran out.

Jains keep the day for a reason of their own. Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara, is said to have broken a fast of about a year with sugarcane juice offered by Shreyansa Kumar at Hastinapur, and Jains who complete the year-long Varshitap austerity end it on this day with the same juice, a rite called the parana.

How the Akshaya Tritiya date is worked out

The festival is the Tritiya, or third lunar day, of the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha) of Vaishakha. A tithi is the span in which the Moon gains 12° on the Sun, so Tritiya runs while the Moon is 24° to 36° ahead. Because it falls in the waxing half, the purnimanta calendars of the North and the amanta calendars of Gujarat, Maharashtra and the South give it the same name. On the Gregorian calendar it usually lands between mid-April and mid-May.

The governing time is purvahna, the forenoon part of daylight: the day on which Tritiya prevails through the forenoon is kept as Akshaya Tritiya. A tithi can begin at any hour, so it sometimes covers neither forenoon fully, or touches both. Panchang makers then apply classical tie-break rules, and some simply take the day with Tritiya at sunrise, which is why a search for “Akshaya Tritiya kab hai” can turn up two answers. The date on this page applies the purvahna rule to New Delhi; the tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, and with it the forenoon, shifts from city to city.

Puja vidhi and the gifts of the season

The day starts with an early bath, often with a little Ganga water added. After a sankalp, a spoken resolve stating name, place and purpose, Vishnu and Lakshmi are worshipped together. Their images are set on a clean cloth and offered sandal paste, akshat (unbroken rice), flowers and, for Vishnu, tulsi leaves; incense and a ghee lamp are lit, seasonal fruit and sweets are placed as naivedya, the Vishnu Sahasranama or a Lakshmi stotra is recited, and aarti closes the puja.

Many households also perform tarpan, pouring water mixed with sesame for the ancestors. Charity is the heart of the day, and the gifts suit the season, because Vaishakha opens the fiercest stretch of the North Indian summer: earthen pots filled with cool water, hand fans, umbrellas, footwear, sattu (roasted gram flour), cucumbers and other fruit, and curd-rice. In many towns people run water stalls for passers-by from morning to evening.

Buying gold or silver has become the best-known modern custom. It is better understood as a symbolic beginning than as a financial plan; in the older view, what one gives away matters at least as much as what one buys. Others mark the day by opening an account, starting a business or laying a foundation stone.

Dos and don’ts families keep on Akha Teej

Traditionally, people try to give something on this day, however small, and to give it with respect rather than as an afterthought. Feeding someone hungry, offering water to the thirsty and helping with a poor family’s wedding are all counted as fitting acts. Many families fast until the morning puja is done or keep to fruit; the custom is flexible, and tradition allows the elderly, the unwell and expectant mothers to eat lightly or skip the fast.

The reasoning that makes good deeds count for more makes many families careful about the opposite. In many homes quarrels, lies and harsh words are avoided, meat and alcohol stay out of the kitchen, and nobody who comes to the door asking for help is sent away empty-handed. A practical note goes with the gold custom: tradition asks only for a token, so there is no reason to strain the household budget or borrow in order to buy.

Temples, shrines and regional observances

In Rajasthan, Akha Teej is one of the busiest wedding days of the year, a direct result of its abujh status. High in the Himalaya, the shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri traditionally reopen on Akshaya Tritiya after their winter closure, and with them the pilgrimage season begins.

In Puri, Lord Jagannath’s 21-day Chandan Yatra begins, and work on the three chariots for the Rath Yatra starts the same day. At the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, the deity’s feet are uncovered for charan darshan on this one day only. At Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh, the thick layer of sandal paste that covers the image through the year is removed for the Chandanotsavam, and devotees receive the once-a-year nija rupa darshan, the sight of the deity’s true form.

Why astrologers regard the day so highly

Akshaya Tritiya is unusual in that both luminaries usually stand in their signs of exaltation. On Akshaya Tritiya the Sun is in sidereal Aries (Mesha), where it is exalted, and with the Moon 24° to 36° ahead, the Moon is usually in, or entering, Taurus (Vrishabha), its own exaltation sign. Vedic astrology reads the Sun as soul and vitality and the Moon as the mind, so a day when both are dignified is taken as a natural foundation for new undertakings. When the Moon also occupies Rohini nakshatra, which lies within Taurus, tradition holds the day to be especially auspicious.

Classically, the deity of Tritiya is Gauri (Muhurta Chintamani), and Tritiya belongs to the Jaya group of tithis along with the eighth and the thirteenth, the name itself meaning “victory”. Vishti, the karana also called Bhadra that is avoided for auspicious acts, never occurs during Shukla Tritiya, so the Bhadra caution that complicates some festival timings does not arise. Even so, for a step as large as a wedding some families still pick a favourable rising sign within the day or consult the individual birth chart.

Why do some panchangs list Akshaya Tritiya 2027 on a different day?

Are Akshaya Tritiya and Parashurama Jayanti on the same day in 2027?

Both belong to Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, but some calendars reckon Parashurama Jayanti by a different time of day, so in certain years the two fall on consecutive days. Check each listing in your panchang.
