Ardra is the sixth of the twenty-seven lunar mansions, an unbroken arc from 6°40’ to 20°00’ of Gemini, and the only division of the zodiac that classical lists hand to Rudra, the roaring form of Shiva. Rahu owns it in the Vimsottari scheme, so a Moon placed anywhere along this arc opens the life with Rahu’s eighteen-year period already running, in whatever unspent fraction remains at the moment of birth. The name is not decorative: ardra means moist or damp, and the tradition keeps that sense close to the surface by drawing the star as a single teardrop, with a polished gem offered as the alternate image of the same thing at a later stage.
Where Ardra sits: 6°40’ to 20°00’ of Gemini
Every part of Ardra falls inside Gemini, so the whole star is a Rahu division laid across Mercury’s dual air sign. Nothing about it spills into a neighbouring rashi the way Krittika or Mrigashira do, which makes it unusually clean to read: one sign lord, one star lord, and no boundary effects to argue about. It follows the last two quarters of Mrigashira and hands over at twenty degrees to Punarvasu, so Ardra occupies the exact middle of Gemini, the portion an astrologer reaches when the mind of the sign has already been awakened and is being tested.
Two lords therefore condition every planet in this arc. Rahu, as the star lord, is the one whose eighteen years run in the dasha sequence and whose own house placement colours the whole span. Mercury, as the sign lord, supplies the medium: naming, counting, argument, the coding of one thing into the symbols of another. Almanac makers use the same degrees for a seasonal purpose that has nothing to do with birth charts, timing the Sun’s entry into Ardra in late June as the traditional signal that the monsoon has arrived, which is why the star carries a reputation for rain long before any horoscope is drawn.
Rudra, the teardrop and the gem behind Ardra
Rudra is the older, fiercer name under which Shiva appears in the Vedic hymns, the one who howls in the storm and whose arrows are dreaded and asked to be laid aside. Assigning him to Ardra tells an astrologer what register the star works in. This is not the serene ascetic on the mountain but the noise that arrives ahead of the rain, the pressure that breaks something open. The Sri Rudram, chanted over the linga during Rudra abhisheka, is addressed to precisely this form, and its structure alternates between the terrifying and the auspicious rather than choosing between them.
The teardrop completes the image instead of softening it. What the tradition points at is the sequence of storm and then wet ground, the discharge that follows the build-up, which is also what the word ardra names. The alternative emblem, a gem, is the same drop at a further stage, having taken a fixed shape and a facet under pressure. Astrologers read the pair together rather than separately: something fluid that has been forced out, then something hard and bright that keeps the memory of it. That is the classical vocabulary for how Ardra is expected to convert difficulty into a finished, valuable form.
Manushya gana, dog yoni and the Adi nadi of Ardra
Ardra belongs to the Manushya gana, the human class, sharing that grouping with Bharani, Rohini, both Phalgunis, both Ashadhas and both Bhadrapadas. The tradition treats the human temper as neither the deva order nor the rakshasa force but a negotiated mixture of both, so texts describe it in terms of ambition, calculation and reciprocity rather than purity or ferocity. Placed in Gemini it also carries the Adi nadi, the vata channel, associated with air and movement, and an air sign holding a vata star is read as doubling the current of restlessness rather than balancing it.
The yoni assigned to Ardra is the dog, which the classical animal tables set in tension with the hare. Whatever else the yoni scheme is used for in matching, its descriptive value here is the watch-animal: alert to what approaches, quick to sound, bonded hard to a small circle, and unwilling to be left out of what is happening. Read together, the three markers give the picture astrologers actually work from for this star, which is a human-class mind running on a vata current with a guard animal’s hearing, quick to register a change in the weather before anyone else names it.
Work and vocation traditionally linked to Ardra
The vocational readings for Ardra follow from its two lords rather than from any list learned by rote. Rahu is associated in the texts with the foreign, the unorthodox, the manufactured and the amplified, and Mercury with language, measurement and the manipulation of symbols. Where those overlap you find the fields astrologers habitually name for this star: research and diagnostics, engineering and machinery, chemistry and pharmacy, statistics, investigation, and anything that involves taking an object apart to learn how it was assembled. The star is also read as comfortable with the technical language other people find forbidding.
Rudra adds a second layer that is about disposition rather than subject. Work associated with this nakshatra is work that moves toward disturbance instead of away from it, so the tradition links it with crisis roles, emergency and disaster response, weather and seismic study, and the demolition or repair side of any trade. Because Rahu’s own eighteen-year period is the first dasha for anyone born under Ardra, astrologers pay particular attention to what that stretch of life is used for, and to how the pada, discussed below, redirects the same raw aptitude toward doctrine, structure, network or retreat.
Matching Ardra: kuta points and the Kanta rajju
Reckoned by the eight kutas of the ashtakoota system, the birth stars that come out closest to Ardra are Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Bharani, Mrigashira and Uttara Bhadrapada. Four of those five are Manushya gana like Ardra itself, and gana carries six of the thirty-six units, so a shared human class is doing much of the arithmetic. Ardra also sits in the Kanta or neck rajju, in the descending arm of that sequence alongside Swati and Shatabhisha; matching texts prefer that the two birth stars not fall in the same rajju group, and none of the five listed above does.
It is worth being exact about what those units measure and what they leave out. The whole reckoning is built from the two Moons — their star, their rashi and the relationships between them — and it says nothing at all about the seventh house of either chart, its lord, the condition of Venus and Mars, the dasha each person is running, or how the two navamsa charts compare. Marriage-matching literature also records Ardra among the birth stars where the bride and groom sharing one janma nakshatra is not raised as an objection. No astrologer treats a kuta count as a conclusion; it is a first filter, and the chart work begins after it.
Ardra pada by pada, Sagittarius navamsa to Pisces navamsa
The four quarters of Ardra fall in the Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces navamsas, in that order, and they carry the purushartha sequence dharma, artha, kama and moksha. The symmetry there is unusual and worth noticing: the two Jupiter navamsas bracket the two Saturn navamsas, so the entire star is held by the two slowest planets while Rahu owns the star and Mercury owns the sign. Traditional naming syllables for the quarters run Ku, Gha, Nga and Chha, which is how the pada is fixed in a family record when the degrees themselves are not written down.
What shifts across them is the direction the same restlessness takes. The first quarter, in Jupiter’s Sagittarius navamsa, is read as the most doctrinal and the most willing to argue from principle. The second, in Capricorn, is the most structural, counting results and tolerating delay to get them. The third, in Aquarius, doubles Saturn with Rahu’s ownership and is read as the most collective and the least orthodox of the four, at home in networks and outliers. The fourth, in Pisces, turns the same storm inward, and astrologers associate it with dissolving, withdrawal and work done out of sight.
Rudra observances kept for Ardra
The observances attached to this star are the ones attached to its deity. Rudra japa and the recitation of the Sri Rudram appear in the classical remedial chapters, and the household form is Rudra abhisheka, a pouring of water, milk or honey over the linga with bilva leaves offered alongside, kept on Mondays and on the Pradosha evenings of each fortnight. Because Rahu holds the star, the customary Rahu practices sit beside them: worship of Durga, whose name the texts give as Rahu’s presiding deity, and gifts of sesame and dark cloth. These are devotional customs recorded in the tradition, described here for study rather than as promises of any outcome.
There is also a calendar observance that belongs to this star alone. Arudra Darshanam, called Thiruvathirai in the Tamil month of Margazhi, falls on the day the Moon occupies Ardra, and it is kept as the night of Shiva as Nataraja, most famously at Chidambaram, where the dancing form is bathed and shown before dawn. Some families born under this nakshatra also mark the monthly return of Ardra with fasting, feeding or a temple visit. None of this is prescribed here as treatment, finance or a fix for anything; it is the observance the tradition itself records for Rudra’s star.
Reading Ardra in a birth chart
The Moon in Ardra is the placement that does the most work, because the Moon fixes the janma nakshatra: it starts the Vimsottari sequence with the unspent balance of Rahu, it decides every kuta in a matching report, and it is the point astrologers describe as the mind’s own weather. Any other planet in the same arc is read more narrowly. It is that planet’s significations, and no one else’s, that get filtered through Rahu’s ownership and Rudra’s register, so Mercury here is spoken of very differently from Venus here, and an ascendant falling in these degrees colours the body and bearing rather than the temperament.
In practice the reading is a short chain. Fix the pada first, since the navamsa lord decides whether the star is being expressed through Jupiter or Saturn. Then look at Rahu by house and sign, because the star lord’s own condition conditions everything sitting in its arc, and then at Mercury as the sign dispositor, which gives Ardra a two-step chain no other Rahu star repeats in quite this way. Transits are read against the same degrees, so a slow planet crossing 6°40’ to 20°00’ of Gemini is treated as crossing Rudra’s ground, whatever else it is doing in the chart.

Questions about Ardra
Which planet rules Ardra nakshatra?
Rahu is the star lord of Ardra in the Vimsottari scheme, and Mercury is the sign lord, because the whole arc from 6°40’ to 20°00’ lies inside Gemini. Anyone with the Moon here begins life in Rahu’s eighteen-year period, carrying whatever portion of it was unspent at birth, and astrologers read every planet in these degrees through both lords together.
What does the name Ardra mean and why is its symbol a teardrop?
Ardra means moist or damp. The teardrop drawn for it holds that meaning literally, pointing at the wet ground left after a storm rather than at sorrow for its own sake, which fits Rudra, the howling Vedic form of Shiva who is its deity. The alternate emblem, a gem, shows the same drop at a later stage, hardened and faceted under pressure.
Which birth stars match Ardra most closely in ashtakoota?
By the eight kutas, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Bharani, Mrigashira and Uttara Bhadrapada come out nearest to Ardra, helped by the Manushya gana that four of them share with it, and none of them falls in Ardra’s own Kanta rajju. Those units weigh only the two Moons, so the seventh house, its lord, Venus, Mars and the running dashas still have to be examined separately.
What changes across the four padas of Ardra?
The quarters fall in the Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces navamsas, so Jupiter holds the first and fourth while Saturn holds the second and third. Tradition reads the first as principled, the second as structural and result-counting, the third as the most collective and unorthodox, and the fourth as inward and dissolving. Their purushartha order runs dharma, artha, kama, moksha.
How is the Moon in Ardra read differently from other planets there?
The Moon fixes the janma nakshatra, so it sets the dasha sequence, drives the matching report and is described as the temperament itself. Another planet in the same degrees is read far more narrowly, with only its own significations passing through Rahu’s ownership and Rudra’s register, which is why Mercury in Ardra and Venus in Ardra are discussed as quite separate things.
