Ashtottari Dasha Calculator

The 108-year cycle: eight lords, no Ketu, and a classical condition that decides whether it applies to a chart at all.

The exact time and place fix the Lagna, and every figure on this page moves with it.

A worked example

The complete 108-year Ashtottari cycle for one illustrative chart, as the engine returns it.

Chart: 13 December 1961, 05:30, Channarayapatna, India (Lahiri ayanamsa)

Ashtottari mahadashas — 13 December 1961

Add the Classical years column and it comes to 108. That is the whole system in one check.

The same chart under Vimsottari, for contrast

Vimsottari gives 1963–1981 to Rahu and 1981–1997 to Jupiter. Ashtottari gives 1961–1976 to Jupiter and only 1976–1988 to Rahu. Same chart, two attributions.

Ashtottari means one hundred and eight, and that is the length of its full cycle. It is a nakshatra dasha like Vimsottari, but it shares its years among eight lords rather than nine — Ketu is absent entirely — and it is conditional: the classical texts do not intend it to be read for every chart. This calculator computes it for any birth details, so the condition is yours to apply.

108 years across eight lords

The spans are Sun 6, Moon 15, Mars 8, Mercury 17, Saturn 10, Jupiter 19, Rahu 12 and Venus 21. They total 108, and the cycle runs in that order — Sun to Moon to Mars to Mercury to Saturn to Jupiter to Rahu to Venus, and back to the Sun. It is neither the Vimsottari order nor the weekday order, and only the Sun and Mercury carry the same span they have under Vimsottari — 6 years and 17 — while every other planet's changes.

The absence of Ketu is the structural difference that matters most in practice. In a chart where Ketu's Vimsottari period covers a stretch of life, Ashtottari has nothing to say about that stretch under the same name — the years are held by one of the other eight instead. The two systems can therefore attribute the same decade to two entirely different planets, which is the whole reason a conditional dasha exists.

Counted from Ardra, not Ashwini

Vimsottari starts its nakshatra cycle at Ashwini under Ketu. Ashtottari starts at Ardra under the Sun, and because twenty-seven nakshatras do not divide evenly among eight lords, the groups are uneven — some lords hold three nakshatras and some hold four. Two charts with the same Moon nakshatra can therefore begin in different lords under the two systems.

The proportional structure below the mahadasha is the familiar one. An antardasha lasts the lord's own span multiplied by the running mahadasha's span and divided by 108, in the same way Vimsottari divides by 120, so the sub-periods of a long mahadasha are correspondingly long.

The condition, and why authorities disagree about it

Ashtottari is a conditional dasha, and there are two well-known rules for when it applies. Parasara's condition is positional: Ashtottari is taken up when Rahu occupies a kendra or a trikona from the lord of the lagna. The other widely used rule is calendrical: the dasha applies to a birth in Krishna paksha during the day or in Shukla paksha at night.

The two rules select different charts, and no amount of arithmetic settles which is right — that is a judgement about the tradition you are following, not about the computation. Our engine computes Ashtottari for every chart precisely so the judgement stays with the reader. If neither condition is met for a chart, the numbers below are still correct arithmetic; they are simply not the periods the classical rule would have you read.

Reading it beside Vimsottari

The most useful thing you can do with an Ashtottari sequence is set it next to the same chart's Vimsottari sequence and look at where they disagree. In the worked example, Vimsottari gives the years from 1963 to 1981 to Rahu and the years from 1981 to 1997 to Jupiter. Ashtottari gives 1961 to 1976 to Jupiter and only 1976 to 1988 to Rahu. The same life, the same chart, two different attributions.

That disagreement is not a defect and it is not a tie to be broken by picking whichever fits the past better. A conditional dasha is meant to be used when its condition is met and set aside when it is not. Reading both and keeping the one that flatters the story is how dasha analysis stops being falsifiable.

Classical source. Parasara gives Ashtottari in Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra; the conditions for its use are argued at length across the later compendia, which is where the disagreement below comes from.
