Choose your Moon sign and see every Saturn dhaiya — Saturn in the 4th or the 8th sign from it — with the dates it enters, steps out and finally leaves.
A worked example
The example chart's Moon is in Aquarius, so its dhaiyas are Saturn in Taurus, the 4th sign from Aquarius, and in Virgo, the 8th. Below are all of them in the table, followed by the dhaiyas that begin between 2020 and 2045 for every Moon sign.

Shani dhaiya — also spelt dhaiyya or dhaiya, or called Saturn's small panoti in Gujarati usage — is the name for the roughly two and a half years Saturn spends in the 4th or the 8th sign counted from your Moon sign. Dhai means two and a half. Where Sade Sati covers three consecutive signs and about seven and a half years, a dhaiya is one sign, and it comes round twice in each thirty-year circuit of Saturn. This Shani dhaiya calculator takes your Moon sign and lists every complete such period between 1940 and 2079: the day Saturn first enters the sign, any stretch when it steps back out, and the day it finally leaves. The dates are for reference.
Counted from the Moon, not the lagna
Transit reading in the classical texts is gochara: where a slow planet is today, counted from the natal Moon's sign. The 1st is the Moon's own sign, the 4th is three signs further on, and the 8th seven signs further on. For a Moon in Aquarius, the 4th is Taurus and the 8th is Virgo; for a Moon in Aries they are Cancer and Scorpio. Two people with the same Moon sign share the same dhaiya dates, whatever their lagna.
That is why the page asks for the Moon sign alone. The birth time and place matter only insofar as they fix the Moon sign, and the Moon stays about two and a quarter days in each sign, so most people's Moon sign is settled by the date of birth. If yours was born near a change of sign, check it with the Moon sign calculator first.
The 4th and the 8th
The two positions carry different traditional names. Saturn in the 4th from the Moon is called ardhashtama, literally half of the eighth, and the texts associate it with home, property, vehicles and peace of mind. Saturn in the 8th is ashtama Shani, associated with obstacles, delays and health. Popular usage groups both as dhaiya, and the free Sade Sati check on this site also uses the name kantaka Shani for the same idea.
These are traditional associations of each position, not forecasts. The gochara chapters read Saturn's transit together with other factors — the strength of Saturn and of the Moon in the birth chart, the dasha running at the time and the ashtakavarga points of the sign Saturn is crossing — and a transit taken on its own is one strand of that reading.
Entry, breaks and the final exit
Saturn does not always cross a sign boundary once. Near the boundary it can enter a sign, turn retrograde and slip back into the previous sign for some months, and then enter again for good. Occasionally it does the reverse near the far boundary, reaching the next sign and returning. Each such stretch outside the sign is shown as a break inside the period, so a dhaiya here runs from the first entry to the final exit with the breaks listed beside it.
Calendars that print only one date per sign change usually give the final entry. That is why published dhaiya dates for the same year can differ by several months: one source starts the period at the first entry, another at the settled one. Both dates are on this page, so you can compare them with whatever list you have.
How the dates were calculated
Every date comes from Saturn's sidereal sign changes between 1940 and 2079, computed for the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the Indian government's standard and the default across this site. The times were worked out in Indian Standard Time, so someone far west of India may see a crossing fall on the previous calendar day. A different ayanamsa moves the dates by a few weeks.
Saturn's motion is regular enough that the same pattern repeats about every 29½ years: a Moon sign that had a dhaiya around 2000 has the matching one around 2029. Periods that began before 1940 or end after 2079 are left out rather than shown with a guessed date. The list under the example gives the dhaiyas beginning between 2020 and 2045 for all twelve Moon signs.
Dhaiya and Sade Sati together
Sade Sati and dhaiya never overlap, because Sade Sati covers the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon and dhaiya the 4th and 8th. Over one thirty-year circuit, a Moon sign meets Saturn in five of the twelve signs this way: about seven and a half years of Sade Sati, then a dhaiya at the 4th, a quieter stretch, a dhaiya at the 8th and another quiet stretch before the next Sade Sati begins.
To see the Sade Sati side of the same circuit, with its three phases, use the free Sade Sati check on this site; it reads your Moon sign from your birth details. The two pages together give the full picture of Saturn's transit from your Moon, for reference.
Classical source. Saturn's transit counted from the natal Moon comes from the classical gochara (transit) chapters, such as those of Phaladeepika, which treat Saturn in the 4th and the 8th from the Moon as difficult positions. Ingress dates use the Lahiri ayanamsa.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shani dhaiya?
It is the period, roughly two and a half years, when Saturn transits the 4th or the 8th sign counted from your natal Moon sign. The 4th-house period is called ardhashtama and the 8th-house period ashtama Shani. Each comes round once in every thirty-year circuit of Saturn, so a person meets two dhaiyas in that time.
Which rashis have Shani dhaiya now?
As of October 2026 Saturn is in Pisces, so the Moon signs for which Pisces is the 4th or the 8th are in dhaiya: Sagittarius (4th) and Leo (8th). The set starts to change when Saturn first enters Aries on 3 June 2027; it returns to Pisces from 20 October 2027 and leaves it for good on 23 February 2028. Choose any Moon sign above to see the status on the day you check and the dates of every period.
How long does Shani dhaiya last?
About two and a half years, the time Saturn takes to cross one sign. With a retrograde break near a boundary, the span from the first entry to the final exit can stretch to three years or a little more, while the time Saturn actually spends in the sign stays close to two and a half.
Is dhaiya the same as Sade Sati?
No. Sade Sati is Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon, about seven and a half years in a row. Dhaiya is Saturn in the 4th or the 8th alone, about two and a half years each. They never overlap; the free Sade Sati check on this site covers the longer period.
Why do other sites give different dhaiya dates?
There are three usual reasons. Some print only the final entry into a sign and ignore the earlier retrograde one; some use a different ayanamsa, which moves the dates by weeks; and some give the date in a different time zone. This page shows both the first entry and the final exit, in Indian Standard Time, for the Lahiri ayanamsa.
Does dhaiya depend on my lagna?
Not as it is defined here. Dhaiya is counted from the Moon sign, so everyone with the same Moon sign shares the same dates. Saturn's transit through the houses counted from the lagna is a separate reading, which the transits tab of the full birth chart shows.
Your Moon sign comes from the full chart
The free birth chart gives the Moon's sign for any birth details, and its transits tab shows where Saturn is now. The dhaiya dates on this page are read from Saturn's sign changes, which are the same for everyone.
