The Upapada lagna, usually shortened to UL, is the arudha pada of the twelfth house: the sign that reflects the twelfth house the way a reflection repeats a face. Jaimini practice treats it as a primary reference point when the chart is examined for marriage and the spouse, and it reads the sign second from the Upapada beside it. This calculator finds the UL from your birth chart, names its whole-sign house from the lagna, and shows the second sign from it together with the Dara pada, the A7. Since the twelfth house is counted from the rising sign, the result needs your birth time.
Why marriage is read from the twelfth house
The twelfth house is the last of the circle, traditionally the house of expenditure, release and what is given away. It can seem an odd place to look for a partner. The usual explanation is that marriage, as the older texts frame it, asks each person to give something up, whether time, independence or resources, in favour of a shared life. The twelfth also stands as the house before the lagna, the one that quietly precedes and supports the self.
The Upapada does not read the twelfth house directly. It takes the arudha, the perceived form, of that house, which places attention on the visible, lived side of a union: the marriage as it exists in the world, its household and its standing, rather than private longing. The Jaimini Sutras give this pada a name of its own rather than leaving it as an unnamed A12.
How the twelfth-house pada is located
Finding the UL is the general arudha procedure applied to one house. Take the twelfth sign from the lagna, find where its lord is placed, and carry the distance forward once more from the lord, moving the result if it lands back on the twelfth or on the sixth, which is the seventh sign from the twelfth. The Arudha Lagna calculator page sets out that counting method in full, with both exceptions and the treatment of signs ruled by two planets.
What changes from chart to chart is only the twelfth house itself. For a Scorpio rising chart it is Libra, ruled by Venus; for Aries rising it is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter; for an Aquarius rising chart it is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. The twelfth falls in Scorpio for Sagittarius rising and in Aquarius for Pisces rising, the two cases where the choice of lord matters for the UL.
Upapada, Dara pada, seventh house and Dara Karaka
Four factors in a chart are linked with partnership, and they are easily confused. The seventh house is the house of the partner and of contracts in Parashara's scheme, read from its sign, lord and occupants. The Dara Karaka is a planet, the one with the fewest degrees in its sign among the chara karakas, and it serves as the significator of the spouse. These two describe substance: the partner and the relationship as such.
The A7, the Dara pada, is the arudha of the seventh house, and Jaimini practice reads it for partnerships of every kind as they appear outwardly, including business associations and attractions. The Upapada is narrower and is reserved for marriage as an established institution. The result highlights the UL and shows the A7 beside it so the two can be compared directly. Each answers a different question, and none of them alone is a reading of a marriage.
The sign second from the Upapada
Jaimini practice does not read the UL in isolation. The sign immediately after it, the second from the Upapada, is examined alongside it, much as the second house from the lagna is read for what sustains the self. Tradition associates this sign with the continuity of the marriage, and the planets that occupy or aspect it are noted together with those on the UL itself.
The result names this second sign, and the planets placed in it can be checked on the rasi chart. Treat it as a pointer to where the tradition looks, not as a statement about how long or how well any union lasts. Planetary dignity, aspects and the running dasha all enter a real reading, and none of those are summarised here.
The 1961 chart, traced from Libra
In the illustrative chart, 13 December 1961, 05:30, Channarayapatna, Lahiri ayanamsa, Scorpio rises at 11°23′. Its twelfth house is Libra, and Libra's lord, Venus, stands at 16°33′ of Scorpio, the second sign from Libra. Two signs onward from Scorpio is Sagittarius, which is neither Libra nor its seventh, so no correction is needed: the UL is Sagittarius, the second house from the lagna.
The sign second from the UL is Capricorn, the third house, holding Jupiter at 13°07′ and Saturn at 4°17′, with Ketu at 27°41′ there as well. The Dara pada lands elsewhere: the seventh house is Taurus, its lord Venus sits in the seventh from Taurus, the exception applies, and the A7 settles in Aquarius, the fourth house. Sagittarius for marriage as an institution and Aquarius for partnership in its outward form show how the two padas can part ways in a single chart.
The navamsa Upapada and the limits of this result
The same twelfth-house pada can also be worked out within the navamsa, the ninth divisional chart, and some readers consult that D-9 Upapada as a further layer. It is a separate calculation with its own lagna and lords. This calculator shows only the rasi-chart UL.
The UL inherits every uncertainty of the lagna. A birth time that tips the rising sign into the next one changes the twelfth house, its lord and therefore the Upapada. A Venus, Jupiter or Saturn close to the end of a sign can move the result as well. If the lagna or the twelfth lord sits within a degree or so of a boundary, check the time before relying on the sign shown. And whichever sign appears, it is a point of reference for study, never a forecast of whether or when anyone marries.
Classical source. Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, in its chapters on the arudha padas and the upapada, where the pada of the twelfth house is named the upapada; the Jaimini Sutras use it, and the sign second from it, in judging marriage.
Frequently asked questions
How is upapada lagna calculated?
It is the arudha of the twelfth house. Locate the twelfth sign from your lagna, see where its lord sits, and project the same distance beyond the lord, adjusting if the result falls on the twelfth or the sixth. The Arudha Lagna page explains each step; the form above does it for you.
What is the 2nd house from upapada?
It is the sign that follows the Upapada in the zodiac. Jaimini practice reads it together with the UL, associating it with the continuation of a marriage. This page names that sign, so the planets placed there can be looked up, as a reference for study rather than a prediction.
Is upapada the same as the 7th house?
No. The seventh house is a house of the chart, read for the partner and partnerships. The Upapada is the arudha of the twelfth house and points to marriage as it is lived and seen. In the example chart the seventh house is Taurus while the UL is Sagittarius.
What is the difference between upapada and the Dara pada?
Both are arudha padas, but of different houses. The Dara pada, or A7, reflects the seventh house and covers partnerships and associations broadly. The Upapada reflects the twelfth and is kept for marriage specifically. The result shows them side by side so their signs can be compared.
Why does my upapada change when I adjust my birth time?
The twelfth house is counted from the rising sign, and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Move the time across a sign boundary and the twelfth house, its lord and so the Upapada all change. If your lagna is near the edge of a sign, small time corrections matter.
Does this calculator show the upapada in the navamsa chart?
No. It shows the Upapada of the birth chart, the rasi or D-1. Some astrologers also derive an Upapada inside the navamsa as an additional layer, but that is a separate calculation with its own lagna, and it is not part of this result.
