Why the pada changes everything

A nakshatra spans 13°20′ and a pada a quarter of that — 3°20′. Move a birth time by a few minutes and the Moon can cross a pada boundary without leaving its nakshatra. Under Vimsottari that shifts the balance of the first period slightly and nothing else. Under Kalachakra it can change the starting sign, the group of nine signs traversed, and whether that group is walked forward or backward.

This makes Kalachakra unusually sensitive to birth-time accuracy, and unusually useful for rectification when the time is uncertain: two candidate birth times that produce indistinguishable Vimsottari sequences can produce Kalachakra sequences that disagree from the first period onward.

Savya and apasavya — direction of travel

Padas fall into two halves. Savya padas walk the group of nine signs forward through the zodiac; apasavya padas walk it backward. You do not need the tables to tell which one a chart got — read the sign column of the result downward. If it descends, the chart is apasavya.

The worked example below runs Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Libra, Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus. It descends, so it is an apasavya sequence, and the first period is only a partial one because the native was born partway through it.

Unequal signs, so no fixed cycle length

Vimsottari always totals 120 years and Ashtottari always totals 108. Kalachakra totals whatever the nine signs your pada gives you happen to add up to, because each sign carries its own span: Cancer runs 21 years, Taurus and Libra 16, Sagittarius and Pisces 10, Gemini and Virgo 9, Aries and Scorpio 7, Leo 5, and Capricorn and Aquarius only 4 each.

You can verify the whole table against the worked example without trusting us: Sagittarius runs 30 July 1962 to 29 July 1972, which is ten years; Cancer runs 30 July 2009 to 30 July 2030, which is twenty-one. The durations printed by the calculator are the classical spans, not a smoothed approximation.

How a sign period is read, and where authorities disagree

Because the lord of a Kalachakra period is a sign rather than a planet, it is read through the sign: the planet that owns it, whatever occupies it, the house it falls in from the lagna, and the aspects on it. A Cancer mahadasha is a Moon period by inheritance, and it takes its colour from wherever the Moon and the fourth-house matters of that chart actually sit.

Classical writers also pair each running sign with a second sign, calling the running one deha (body) and its counterpart jeeva (life), and use the pair in longevity discussion. That material is presented here as computation only — it is not a prediction about anyone's health or lifespan, and it should not be read as one.

One honest caveat about the tables themselves. The pada-to-group mapping survives in more than one recension, and the manuscripts disagree over a handful of padas. When two pieces of software give you different Kalachakra starting signs for the same birth, they are almost always disagreeing about which reading of the table to follow rather than about the arithmetic.
