Kark is the Moon's own sign, a watery rashi that holds Pushya, the nakshatra many panchangs treat as the most auspicious of all for beginnings. Its naming letters are Hi, Hu, He and Ho, followed by five syllables from the retroflex Da series. That second group surprises many parents, because it is not the familiar dental D of Deepak or Divya, and it changes which names truly belong to a Kark rashi baby.

One quarter of Punarvasu, all of Pushya and Ashlesha

Kark begins with the fourth pada of Punarvasu, Aditi's nakshatra ruled by Jupiter, which gives the letter Hi. Pushya follows in full. Its deity is Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods, its ruling planet is Saturn and its symbol is a cow's udder, an image of nourishment; its padas give Hu, He, Ho and Da. The sign ends with all four padas of Ashlesha, the coiled serpent, whose deities are the Nagas and whose ruler is Mercury. Ashlesha's letters are Di, Du, De and Do.

Because the Moon rules Kark and moves fast, the sign is crossed in a little over two days, and Pushya alone in about one. A birth on the evening of one day and another on the following morning can belong to different padas, which is exactly why the letter has to be read from the time of birth and not guessed from the date.

The retroflex Da and why Deepak is not a Kark name

In Devanagari, Kark's Da, Di, Du, De and Do are written with the retroflex letter, the one in damru, made with the tongue curled back. The dental letter of Deepak, Dev and Divya is a different akshar altogether and belongs to Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati, that is to Kumbh and Meen. Latin spelling hides the difference, which is how many online lists end up putting Deepak under Kark. This site checks every name in Devanagari, so the Kark list keeps only names that genuinely begin with the rashi's letters.

The consequence is practical. Very few Indian given names begin with the retroflex Da, so almost every Kark name in common use starts with the H letters: Hitesh, Himanshu, Hemant, Heramb for boys, Hema, Himani, Hetal, Hiral for girls. Names that open with hri, such as Hriday and Hrishikesh, are heard as Hri or Hru, and since Hi and Hu are both Kark letters they qualify too.

When the akshar falls in Ashlesha

A baby born with the Moon in Ashlesha has Di, Du, De or Do as the letter, and real names from those syllables are scarce. Families handle this in two familiar ways. Some keep a short janma nama in the retroflex letter for the horoscope and rituals and give the child a separate everyday name. Others choose a name from Pushya's or Punarvasu's H letters, staying within the same rashi. Neither is a breach of tradition; the ceremonial name is the one the akshar rule is really about.

A lunar sign and its names

Since Kark is ruled by the Moon, some parents enjoy a name whose meaning echoes it, and the H letters make that easy: Himanshu means the Moon, literally the one with cool rays, and Hima evokes snow and coolness. Others prefer the Pushya connection with Brihaspati and look for names of wisdom. Such choices are a matter of family taste; the tradition asks only that the janma nama begin with the right letter.

Remember too that Kark rashi is not the Cancer sun sign of late June and July. The rashi used in namkaran is the sidereal sign holding the Moon at birth, so a Kark rashi baby can be born in any month of the year.

Find your baby's nakshatra and akshar

The naming letter follows the Moon, not the Sun: the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at the moment of birth gives the akshar. That is why a Kark rashi child is identified from the birth date together with the time and place. Enter those details in the nakshatra calculator to get the nakshatra, its pada and the Moon sign, then read that pada's letter in the table above.

Frequently asked questions

Which letters are used for Kark rashi names?

Hi from the fourth pada of Punarvasu; Hu, He, Ho and Da from Pushya; and Di, Du, De and Do from Ashlesha. The Da-series letters are the retroflex sound, not the dental D of names such as Deepak.

Why isn't Deepak or Dev listed as a Kark rashi name?

Those names begin with the dental letter, which is the akshar of Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati, in Kumbh and Meen. Kark's Da-series letters are retroflex, a different akshar, so the names do not fit Kark.

My baby was born in Pushya nakshatra. Which letter applies?

Pushya's four padas give Hu, He, Ho and Da in order. The birth time fixes the pada, which the nakshatra calculator shows; most families with a Pushya baby end up with an Hu, He or Ho name.

Can Hrishikesh or Hriday be a Kark rashi name?

Yes. The opening hri is heard as Hri or Hru, and both Hi and Hu are Kark letters, so these names fit the rashi either way.

Is Kark rashi the same as the Cancer zodiac sign?

Not usually. The Cancer sun sign is set by the Sun's tropical position on the birth date. Kark rashi for naming is the sidereal sign of the Moon at birth, which changes every two to three days.
