Singh is the royal sign of the Sun, and its first nakshatra, Magha, is pictured as a throne. For naming, Singh rashi is defined by the Moon rather than the Sun: a child whose Moon stood in sidereal Leo at birth takes a name from the nine Singh letters, Ma, Mi, Mu, Me, Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu and Te. In practice the M syllables do almost all the work, because the four Ta-series letters here are the hard retroflex sounds that very few names begin with.

Magha, Purva Phalguni and one pada of Uttara Phalguni

The four padas of Magha give Ma, Mi, Mu and Me. Magha is presided over by the Pitris, the ancestors, and ruled by Ketu, and its throne or palanquin symbol carries the idea of lineage and inherited standing. Purva Phalguni follows with Mo, Ta, Ti and Tu; its deity is Bhaga, the god of fortune and shared enjoyment, its ruler is Venus and its symbol is the front legs of a bed. The sign closes with the first pada of Uttara Phalguni, whose deity is Aryaman and ruler the Sun, giving the letter Te. The rest of Uttara Phalguni continues into Kanya.

Two of these nakshatras, Purva and Uttara Phalguni, are a pair, the front and back legs of a couch, and the Moon spends roughly a day in each. That is why the letter of a Singh baby born late at night can differ from that of a cousin born the next morning.

A rashi of M names

The M letters are among the most productive in Indian naming. Ma gives Madhav, Mahesh, Manish, Manav, Madhuri, Mansi, Mallika; Mi gives Mihir, Milind, Meera, Mitali; Mu gives Mukesh, Mukund, Mukta; Me gives Mehul, Medha, Megha, Meghna; Mo gives Mohan, Mohit and Mohini. Vowel length is ignored, so Meera with its long ee is a Mi name and Manish with its short a a Ma name. A name such as Mridula, with the vocalic ri, is heard as Mri or Mru and stays within Singh either way.

The Ta, Ti, Tu and Te of Singh are the retroflex series, the sounds in words such as tamatar, not the dental T of Tarun, Tara or Tulsi. Those dental names belong to Swati and Vishakha in Tula. Since hardly any given names begin with the retroflex sound, a baby whose pada carries one of them is usually named from Purva Phalguni's Mo or from Magha's M letters, or receives a short ceremonial name with the strict letter and a separate everyday name.

Ancestors in the naming

Magha's association with the Pitris fits a custom found across India: naming a child after a grandparent or an earlier member of the family. When the inherited name happens to start with an M, a Magha baby can carry it as both janma nama and everyday name. When it does not, families often keep the ancestral name as the everyday one and give a separate nakshatra name for the horoscope, a practice the namkaran tradition has always allowed.

The naming rite itself is usually held on the tenth, eleventh or twelfth day, after the period of birth impurity, or on a later day chosen from the panchang. The name is spoken into the baby's right ear, and the family then uses it aloud for the first time.

Singh rashi or Leo?

Calling a late-July or August baby a Leo describes the Sun's tropical position. Singh rashi for naming describes where the Moon was in the sidereal zodiac, and the Moon passes through Singh every month for about two and a quarter days. The two coincide only occasionally, so the nakshatra calculator, not the birthday, is the place to check.

Find your baby's nakshatra and akshar

The naming letter follows the Moon, not the Sun: the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at the moment of birth gives the akshar. That is why a Singh rashi child is identified from the birth date together with the time and place. Enter those details in the nakshatra calculator to get the nakshatra, its pada and the Moon sign, then read that pada's letter in the table above.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Singh rashi name letters?

Ma, Mi, Mu and Me from Magha; Mo, Ta, Ti and Tu from Purva Phalguni; and Te from the first pada of Uttara Phalguni. The Moon's pada at birth decides which one applies to the baby.

Are names like Tarun or Tulsi Singh rashi names?

No. Singh's Ta-series letters are retroflex sounds. Tarun and Tulsi begin with the dental T, the akshar of Swati and Vishakha, so they belong to Tula rashi.

My baby was born in Magha nakshatra. Which letter should we use?

Magha's four padas give Ma, Mi, Mu and Me in order. The exact birth time fixes the pada; with it you can choose from names such as Madhav, Mihir, Mukund or Megha.

What if the akshar is a retroflex Ta, Ti or Tu?

Very few names begin with those sounds. Families usually choose from the M letters of the same rashi or keep a short ceremonial name with the strict letter and give a separate everyday name.

Is Singh rashi the same as the Leo sun sign?

No. Singh rashi for naming is the sidereal sign of the Moon at birth; the Leo sun sign is the tropical sign of the Sun by date. A Singh rashi baby can be born in any month.
