Kumbh Rashi Names — Baby Boy & Girl Names Starting with Gu, Ge, Go, Sa, Si, Su, Se, So, Da
The nine Kumbh rashi letters are Gu, Ge, Go, Sa, Si, Su, Se, So, Da. They are the naming syllables (akshar) of Dhanishta (padas 3–4), Shatabhisha (all four padas), Purva Bhadrapada (padas 1–3), so your baby's letter is set by the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at birth. Below are the letters with their nakshatra and pada, 41 boy names and 39 girl names with meanings, and how families choose among them.

Kumbh, the water-bearer, is an airy sign ruled by Saturn, and for naming it is the rashi of the S names. Five of its nine letters, Sa, Si, Su, Se and So, open hundreds of familiar Indian names, from Sagar and Sanjay to Sita and Sunita. The other four are Gu, Ge, Go and the dental Da. As with every rashi, the letter for a particular Kumbh baby comes from the pada of the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth.
Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada
The second half of Dhanishta, the star of the Vasus, ruled by Mars and pictured as a drum, opens Kumbh with Gu and Ge. Shatabhisha follows in full with Go, Sa, Si and Su. Its name means a hundred physicians, its deity is Varuna, lord of the waters and of cosmic order, its ruler is Rahu, and its symbol is an empty circle. The first three padas of Purva Bhadrapada close the sign with Se, So and Da. That nakshatra belongs to Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat, is ruled by Jupiter and is pictured as the front legs of a funeral cot; its fourth pada, Di, lies in Meen.
The Moon spends about a day in each of these nakshatras. A Kumbh baby born in the early hours and another born that evening can therefore have letters as different as Go and Si.
S names, G names and the dental Da
Sa is one of the most used letters in Indian naming: Sagar, Sachin, Sanjay, Sameer, Sarita, Sapna, Savita. Si gives Siddharth, Sita and Seema; Su gives Suresh, Sunil, Sumit, Sudha, Suman, Sunita; Se gives fewer, Sejal among them; So gives Somesh, Soham, Sonal and Sonali. Names that open with sau, such as Saurabh and Saumya, are heard as Sa or So, and since both are Kumbh letters they belong here. Names with sh, such as Shiv or Shreya, start with a different consonant that is not among Kumbh's letters.
Go gives Gopal, Govind, Gokul and Gomti; Gu gives Gunjan and Gunwant; Ge has few names. Gaurav and Gautam are deliberately left out even though Go is a Kumbh letter, because the opening gau can equally be heard as Ga, which belongs to Makar. The dental Da of Purva Bhadrapada's third pada gives Daksh, Darshan, Dayanand, Damini and Daya.
Varuna's water and the naming rite
Kumbh is pictured as a pot of water, and its central nakshatra belongs to Varuna, the keeper of the waters. Water is present in the naming rite as well: the child is bathed and dressed before the ceremony, and the family sips water at the sankalpa in which the name is announced. Tradition holds the rite on the tenth to twelfth day, and the father or an elder whispers the janma nama into the right ear before anyone else uses it.
Since the S letters offer so much choice, Kumbh families often face the opposite problem from parents of rarer rashis: too many good names. A common way through is to filter first by the exact letter of the pada, then by meaning, then by how the name sounds with the surname and with the names of brothers and sisters.
Kumbh rashi and the Aquarius date range
A person born from late January to February is an Aquarius in tropical sun-sign columns. Kumbh rashi in naming means the Moon in sidereal Aquarius, which the Moon passes through for about two and a quarter days every month, so Kumbh rashi babies are born throughout the year and are identified from the birth data, not the birthday.
Find your baby's nakshatra and akshar
The naming letter follows the Moon, not the Sun: the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at the moment of birth gives the akshar. That is why a Kumbh rashi child is identified from the birth date together with the time and place. Enter those details in the nakshatra calculator to get the nakshatra, its pada and the Moon sign, then read that pada's letter in the table above.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Kumbh rashi name letters?
Gu and Ge from the second half of Dhanishta; Go, Sa, Si and Su from Shatabhisha; and Se, So and Da from Purva Bhadrapada's first three padas. The Moon's pada at birth decides the letter.
Is Saurabh a Kumbh rashi name?
Yes. Its opening sau is heard as Sa or So, and both are Kumbh letters, so the name belongs to this rashi under either reading.
Why are Gaurav and Gautam not in the Kumbh list?
Their opening gau can be read as Go, a Kumbh letter, or Ga, a Makar letter. Because the two readings fall in different rashis, this site leaves them off both lists.
My baby was born in Shatabhisha nakshatra. Which letter applies?
Shatabhisha's four padas give Go, Sa, Si and Su. The exact birth time fixes the pada; names such as Gopal, Sagar, Sita or Sunita then fit.
Is Kumbh rashi the same as Aquarius?
No. Kumbh rashi for naming is the sidereal sign of the Moon at birth. Aquarius in sun-sign astrology is the tropical sign of the Sun by date, and the two usually differ.
