No dates in January, April, July, August, September, October: there the closed periods (Kharmas, Chaturmas, a Jupiter or Venus combustion) or the nakshatra and tithi conditions leave no qualifying day.
Three kinds of griha pravesh
The muhurta tradition distinguishes three kinds of entry. Apurva pravesh is the first entry into a newly built home, and it is held to the strictest conditions. Sapurva pravesh is a return to a house after a long absence, such as a stay abroad. Dvandva pravesh is the re-entry after a house has been rebuilt or repaired following damage. The date list on this page applies the full conditions meant for a new home; families returning to an existing house often use a lighter selection.
Tradition also expects the house to be ready before the ceremony: the roof finished, the door frames and doors fitted, and the threshold in place. A half-built structure is not formally entered, which is why many families hold a separate bhoomi pujan when construction starts and keep griha pravesh for the end.
Months that suit a new home
Classical manuals such as the Muhurta Chintamani name Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha as the best lunar months for entering a new house, with Kartika and Margashirsha acceptable. The rainy-season months that fall inside Chaturmas — from Devshayani Ekadashi to Dev Uthani Ekadashi — are avoided, and so are the two solar months of Kharmas, when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces.
Jupiter and Venus must both be visible, not combust (asta), on the chosen day, and calendars commonly keep away from the days just before and after either planet sets or rises. Pitru Paksha, Holashtak, an intercalary month (adhik maas) and eclipse days are traditionally left out as well. That is why the months of 2027 differ so much in how many dates they offer: a single long combustion of Jupiter or Venus can empty a season that would otherwise be full.
Nakshatras, tithis and weekdays
Two groups of nakshatras are preferred for a new home. The fixed (dhruva) group — Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada — is linked with permanence, which is what one hopes for in a house. The gentle (mridu) group — Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati — is linked with ease and harmony. Several traditions also allow Dhanishtha and Shatabhisha.
The lunar days usually accepted are Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi, in the bright fortnight by preference. The Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya are excluded, and many families also skip Pratipada; the list here also admits Shashthi and Dwadashi, as many published panchangs do, and each date’s tithi is shown in the table. Among weekdays, Tuesday is avoided almost everywhere because Mars is associated with fire, and Sunday is avoided by many for the same reason; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the usual choices, while Saturday is accepted in some traditions and avoided in others. When the hour is fixed, Vishti karana and the yogas Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are avoided, just as for other ceremonies.
Lagna, direction and the rite itself
Within a qualifying day, the hour is chosen by lagna. A fixed rising sign — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius — is favoured, with benefic planets in the angles or trines and the eighth house empty. The texts add a rule that depends on the house itself: the Sun should be on the left of the person entering (vama ravi), which is worked out from the direction the main door faces and the time of entry. Because that differs for every house, no general list can apply it.
The rite usually begins with Ganesha puja and Vastu puja, often with a Navagraha puja or a small havan. The family enters carrying a kalash of water, each person stepping over the threshold right foot first — in many homes the lady of the house leads — and milk is boiled in the new kitchen until it rises over the rim — a sign, by custom, of plenty. Many families keep a lamp lit and do not leave the house empty on the first night.
Checks that depend on your family
The person in whose name the home is entered — usually the head of the household — matters in the final selection. A priest checks the Moon’s position that day from that person’s Moon sign (chandra bala) and counts the day’s nakshatra from their birth star (tara bala), avoiding the inauspicious positions in each cycle. Some families also consult the Vastu layout of the house before fixing the hour.
These checks are personal, so the list here stops short of them. Use it to find the days of 2027 on which the calendar conditions are met, then let a priest or a personal muhurta reading pick the hour for your home.
Reading the list for your city
All dates are computed for New Delhi, with the panchang day reckoned from sunrise. Nakshatras and tithis change at exact moments, so in another city the qualifying hours on the same date can begin earlier or later, and a date that only just meets the conditions in Delhi may not meet them elsewhere.
You may also find differences from printed almanacs. Some leave wider margins around a combustion, some include regional customs, and many count self-auspicious days such as Akshaya Tritiya for a house-warming regardless of the other limbs. When you are moving into a rented flat rather than a new home of your own, most families simply choose a good day from the panchang rather than a full apurva muhurta.
Griha Pravesh Muhurat 2027: frequently asked questions
Which months have griha pravesh muhurat dates in 2027?
In 2027, the dates meeting the classical conditions for New Delhi fall in February, March, May, June, November, December. The table on this page lists them month by month for New Delhi. Months that fall in Kharmas or Chaturmas, or while Jupiter or Venus is combust, show few or no dates.
Can griha pravesh be done during Chaturmas or Kharmas?
A first entry into a new home is traditionally not held in either period. Families returning to an existing house sometimes do so with a simpler puja, following their priest’s advice.
Which day of the week is best for a house-warming?
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the usual choices. Tuesday is avoided almost everywhere and Sunday by many families; Saturday depends on the tradition followed.
Do I need a griha pravesh muhurat for a rented house?
The full classical muhurta is meant for a newly built home. For a rented flat most families pick a good day from the panchang and perform a simple Ganesha and Vastu puja.
Is griha pravesh the same as Vastu puja?
No. Vastu puja honours the deity of the site and is usually part of the house-warming, while griha pravesh is the formal entry into the home at the chosen time.
Why do griha pravesh dates in 2027 differ between calendars?
Almanacs make different choices at the edges — how many days to leave around Jupiter or Venus combustion, which regional customs to follow, and whether to count self-auspicious days. The local sunrise also shifts the qualifying hours from city to city; these dates are for New Delhi.
