Mundan Muhurat 2027: Chudakarana Dates Meeting the Conditions

Mundan, the ceremonial first shaving of a child’s head, is known in the texts as chudakarana or chaula. This page lists the 2027 dates meeting the classical conditions for it, computed for New Delhi and arranged by month. The sections below explain those conditions, which are stricter than for most childhood rites because mundan, unlike the naming ceremony, is a date the family chooses freely.

16 dates across 6 months of 2027 meet the classical conditions for New Delhi.

No dates in January, August, September, October, November, December: there the closed periods (Kharmas, Chaturmas, a Jupiter or Venus combustion) or the nakshatra and tithi conditions leave no qualifying day.

What mundan is and when it is done

Chudakarana is the eighth of the sixteen samskaras. The hair a child is born with is removed, often leaving a small tuft (shikha) at the crown, and the shaving is accompanied by prayers for long life and health. The Grihya Sutras place it in the first or third year, and many families follow the custom of an odd year — the first, third or fifth — counted from birth.

Many families hold mundan at a temple, a river bank or a place of pilgrimage tied to the family deity, and offer the hair there. Wherever it is held, the date is chosen by muhurta, and since there is no fixed day to keep, the texts apply nearly all the seasonal restrictions used for a wedding.

Nakshatras used for the first haircut

Twelve nakshatras are accepted: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha and Revati. The list is noticeably different from the one for marriage. It leans on the movable and light stars, includes Jyeshtha, and leaves out the fixed group — Rohini and the three Uttaras — that suits undertakings meant to stay unchanged; hair, after all, grows back.

A nakshatra rarely covers a whole civil date, so the table gives for each date the hours of daylight in which the listed nakshatra and an accepted tithi coincide. Dates where they meet only at night, or only for a few minutes, are not listed.

Tithis and weekdays

The tithis accepted are Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi in the bright fortnight, and Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami and Dashami in the dark fortnight. Excluded are the Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Pratipada, Shashthi, Ashtami, Dwadashi, Purnima and Amavasya, and the last days of the waning Moon.

Only Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are used. Tuesday and Saturday, the days of Mars and Saturn, are avoided for any operation with a blade on a child, and Sunday is left out in the reading followed here.

Seasons and planets that close the calendar

Mundan is a mangal karya, an auspicious household undertaking, and the same pauses apply to it as to a wedding. Kharmas — the Sun in Sagittarius from mid-December to mid-January and in Pisces from mid-March to mid-April — is excluded. So is Chaturmas, from Devshayani Ekadashi to Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which also takes in Pitru Paksha.

Jupiter and Venus must both be visible: while either is combust (guru asta or shukra asta) no date is listed. Holashtak, the eight days before Holi, and an intercalary month (adhik maas) are excluded too. Because these periods add up to a large part of the year, 2027 has far fewer mundan dates than dates for buying a vehicle or naming a child, and some months have none.

Family customs and personal checks

Several customs sit alongside the calendar. Many traditions avoid mundan while the child’s mother is in the later months of a new pregnancy, and some families keep to the deity, place or month their elders used. The child’s own chart can be consulted as well: a priest may check the Moon’s strength from the child’s Moon sign and choose a rising sign for the hour.

These considerations differ from family to family, so they are not built into the list. Read it as the set of days on which the calendar conditions are met, and let family custom choose among them.

How the dates were computed

The calculation is done for New Delhi with each panchang day running from sunrise to sunrise. Because tithis and nakshatras end at precise moments, the qualifying hours on a date shift slightly from city to city, and the shortest windows may disappear altogether far from Delhi.

Each date shown also appears in a published panchang’s list for New Delhi. A day that meets the conditions here but is missing from that list, usually because it applies a different lagna or yoga test, is left out, so the table favours a shorter list of well-supported dates.

Mundan Muhurat 2027: frequently asked questions

At what age is mundan done?

In 2027, the dates meeting the classical conditions for New Delhi fall in February, March, April, May, June, July. Traditionally in the first or third year, and many families keep to an odd year — the first, third or fifth — counted from the child’s birth.

Which dates in 2027 are good for mundan?

The month-by-month table on this page lists the 2027 dates meeting the classical conditions for New Delhi, with the daylight hours when the nakshatra and tithi conditions hold together.

Why are there so few mundan dates in some months of 2027?

Mundan avoids Kharmas, Chaturmas, Holashtak, adhik maas and any period when Jupiter or Venus is combust. When one of these covers a month, that month shows few or no dates.

Which weekdays are used for mundan?

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tuesday and Saturday are avoided for the haircut, and Sunday is left out in the reading used here.

Can mundan be done at a temple on any day?

Many families hold mundan at a temple or pilgrimage place, but they usually still choose the date by muhurta. Some temples also have their own days for the rite.

Do the timings change by city?

Yes, slightly. The dates are computed for New Delhi; tithi and nakshatra changes are fixed moments and sunrise varies by place, so the hours move in other cities.

This list is a general shortlist for everyone. Narrowing it to an hour for your own family — tara bala, chandra bala and the lagna from your charts — is personal work.
